(KFFL) Cincinnati Bengals SS Taylor Mays was running with the first team this week at practice, but he really struggles in coverage and is too stiff. The team might move a cornerback to couple with FS Reggie Nelson. If so, CB Nate Clements might be that player. SS Jeromy Miles is a player the Bengals really like, and he might emerge as a starter with a strong training camp and preseason.

I think most of us saw this coming. Marvin wants coverage safeties and he isn't one. Our DBs might just keep us out of the playoffs or from making a nice run.

At this point I am tired of reading these comments. Mays has 4 preseason games to either prove everyone right or wrong. He will have his chances and he will be tested. Until then no one really knows how good or bad he is. We will find out soon enough.

Well, that and they pay the coaches good money to evaluate talent and, well, coach NFL players.

But yeah, fuck that shit. Mike Brown should hire a beat writer next time...

Coaches picked Akili Smith. That's just awful logic. According to that coaches bat 100%. Coaches picked JaMarcus Russell.

Coaches miss. They are human. And beat writers watch a heck of alot of football. They are paid to do it.

Whereas sports blogger picked.. nobody, ever. I'd say even getting 9 out of 10 wrong is still more credible than a bunch of empty speculation.

If beat writers were among the best evaluators of talent, they'd probably be scouts...

Some of you need to realize that these guys are being paid to post their opinions and they are not deliberately trying to get you to tear up and poop your panties. Jesus. Fucking. Christ. Chill. Nobody gives a shit what this guy writes. Its just another opinion for us to take into consideration before we get a chance to see him out there for ourselves.

I thought I just read in an article that Mays was the only guy in practice that could cover Gresham? That makes no sense.
Yeah, I've heard good things about Mays so far. Supposedly made a great play on a dalton throw to come up with a pick.

I can't wait until Friday to see some live action instead of listening to someone else's opinions.

Practices I've watched. Miles and Taylor switch out a lot with starters. It's safe to say that position is far from decided.

Mays has shined a couple times.

From what I've seen, he's also made some bonehead errors. It looks like he losses wr's or forgets which coverage he's in. I think he looks good when his responsibility is clear. IE hey go cover Gresham. Bam done. Problem is, safety's have to cover the whole field, and it looks like he gets lost.

Dumb logic. Coaches are supposed to be wrong or miss in the scope of the discussion you are having. If a coach came with the same starting players and the same 53 man roster year in and year out. He'd fail but using your logic he wouldn't miss.

300+ players enter the league and there is 0 job growth. Figure it out.

Good coaches promote a competitive environment. All this sports blogger has done is provided fake scouting to the process playing out.

In one of the many Taylor debates, I explained this to you and you didn't get back then either. Mays isn't being handed anything. It's true he may not start. I guess you could say the coach "missed" but he had to be right on the guy that is starting.

The key parts you are overlooking: Is there a competitive environment? Is the pool of participants NFL quality?

You put to much faith into this "fake" scouting. I could go down to PBS and do the same thing. I know there is competition. I can watch subsitution patterns and guess at the depth chart. Then apply "fake" scouting to support my opinion.

Anyone could do that with Shipley. He's running with 3rd team. His main competition (Hawkins) is on alot of special teams. It's a good guess Hawkins looks to have a spot. Then I could make up some bullshit about Shipley not being fluid in his hips yada, yada, yada. And ultimately be correct based on nothing but guessing.

IMHO, there is always too much speculation and focus on individual players. Every team has a shitload of talent. It all comes down to how the coaches use it. That said, it is fun to assess the players individually, whom should play, start, hit the road. But too much emphasis is put on single players that aren't much to fight over.

yea I wouldn't completely write it off, but there's absolutely no context for this piece, or whether the person who wrote it even knows what a football is.

They got their context from Pete Prisco ...

Strong safety: Taylor Mays was running with the first team the days I was there, but he really struggles in coverage. He is too stiff. I would look for the Bengals to move a corner -- maybe Clements -- inside to team with Reggie Nelson. They also like Miles.

Projected winner: Too tough to call.

ahh, that helps. Thanks.

Anywho, I suspect we'll see Mays on first and second downs for sure, and depending on the opponent and situation either Mays or Nelson coming off the field, replaced by Clements or Newman in the nickel package.

Mays is the only player on the roster who can match up with the top TE's in the league. He'll also be the top run-stuffing safety on the team.

Bengals' Clements seeing time at safety
August, 8, 2012 A\
By Jamison Hensley | ESPN.com

CINCINNATI -- The Bengals' competition at strong safety was expected to be a battle between Taylor Mays and Jeromy Miles. But there was another player seeing time at that spot during Wednesday's practice -- veteran cornerback Nate Clements.

It's unknown whether this is an experiment or if the Bengals are thinking of starting Clements at safety. The Bengals definitely want to see what Clements looks like at that spot because he split his snaps on the first-team defense at cornerback and safety.

This could be a way of extending the career of the 32-year-old Clements, who is a strong tackler. It would allow the Bengals a chance of getting their five best defensive backs on the field. The Bengals have been looking for a strong safety since releasing Chris Crocker in early April.

Clements, who has played 12 seasons at cornerback, said it's not up to him that he's in the mix to be a starting safety. Asked if he was comfortable at safety, Clements said after practice, "As long as I'm on the field, I'm comfortable."

When Clements moved back to safety, the Bengals used Adam Jones and Terence Newman at corner, while Leon Hall covered the slot. While Clements said it's different to play safety, it's not a major adjustment for him.

"Whatever coach wants me to do and asks me to do, I have to make sure as a player that I know my responsibilities and know all the positions," he said. "As a cornerback, I learned early on to study all the positions in the defensive secondary so I would know where my help is and when I'm able to take that calculated risk. The difference is now I'm playing the positions."

Bengals coach Marvin Lewis has done this move before. When he was the defensive coordinator for the Ravens, he switched Rod Woodson from cornerback to safety. Woodson went on to go to four Pro Bowls at safety.

Clements is in the final year of a two-year, $10.5 million contract.

I would like to see Mays has a utility guy on defense. A guy that doesn't really have one position but moves around depending on the offensive package and situation. If you need a rusher, send him. If it's 4 and 1 and they're going for it, have him jam the TE or something. I wonder why they haven't had him practice some OLB... even if it was just to see what he was capable of doing.
