Buccaneers: Alex Cappa should be the only option at RG going forward

The Buccaneers can’t move on from Alex Cappa.

After missing the Super Bowl due to an injury and the Buccaneers drafting a Swiss army knife for depth on their offensive line, Alex Cappa has been in conversation for all of the wrong reasons in recent months. Cappa is the only smart option for the Bucs at right guard going forward, and there is no reason for the team to make a change now.

Cappa may not be the flashiest player to pair alongside a line that has All-Pro talent throughout, but he gets the job done.

After giving up four sacks in 2019, there were some questions about Cappa’s abilities to be a starter on a unit that was protecting the immobile Tom Brady, but the young guard was able to rise to the occasion. With no sacks surrendered in 2020, Cappa should’ve ended the discussions about his abilities without question.

Cappa’s main strength is in pass-protection. While there are some shortcomings with his abilities as a run blocker, pass-protection is a much more valuable skill in an NFL that rewards teams for throwing the football more. The Bucs aren’t going to hang their hat offensively on their run game, nor should they with this roster, so Cappa isn’t a liability in what Tampa needs the most.

PFF had Karras as the 12 highest graded Guard of 54. His pass blocking grade was 6th highest. His 98.2% pass block efficiency was also 6th highest for guards. His 98.5% in True Pass Sets would rank him as the 4th best guard.
