All the leverage is in Cincinnati's hands, but Tee's agent seems like a bitter dick, not a deal maker like Burrow's. It would be a shame for Tee go into this season without a new deal, as if he gets a serious injury he could then never see his life-changing contract. So he is fine playing games with Tee's future and putting it at injury risk so he can net an extra million in commission and keep his reputation as being a hard negotiator. But Tee, who has not made that much money yet as a player, shouldn't go along with such a risk. The problem is that there might not be anyone in Tee's corner actually looking out for him, as in theory the agent should be doing that. But many of these big time agents who are already rich, are not. I'm sure the Bengals would gladly give Tee 20 million a year right now. But because Mulugheta wants him to get 30 so his commission is higher, he will risk the entire thing for the next year or two. The Bengals really have two choices: A) Sign Tee now to an extension (B) Tag him next spring and trade him before the draft Tag him next spring and hope he shows up to play one more season in Cincinnati is silly. There will always be a WR available that is a good value. That would be a terrible plan. The comp picks come at the end of rounds so at best it would be about pick 100. Bengals should at least tag him for 2024. Tag number will be about 22 mil next year for WR. Higgins would be better off signing an extension than playing for cheap this year and a tag next season. I would play Higgins this season and try to get a nice package for him in the off-season. Hopefully one of the rookie WRs will develop into a nice player. |BlackJesus| Posted September 8, 2023 Report Share Posted September 8, 2023 With the ability to make unlimited amounts in endorsements, you would think Higgins would realize that 22 a year as a 4-time Super Bowl Champion where he can be the spokesperson for many different companies and make untold millions --- is better than 28 per year, going 6-11 on some scrub squad and being an afterthought on the minds of most fans, with no endorsements. NBA players have realized this, which is why some of them make more $ off the court than on it, if they play for a winning team and combine their talents to form "dream teams". Plus you have your post playing career to think about. Tee Higgins as a multiple SB Champion and Hall of Famer has way more doors opened for him once he retires than a WR who took a big day in Carolina or Houston and then never made the playoffs the rest of his career. 2 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Burrow has half of that now at 55 ... so there is 55 left for Chase and Higgins to split (both of them adding up to the same as Burrow). If Chase takes 32 and Higgins takes 23 that works as 55. Higgins knew what he was getting in Mulugheta when he hired him. He's a guy that gets top dollar. He's also a guy where his clients often have to change teams to get that dollar. Higgins knew all this when he hired him. Mulugheta is just doing his job, which is what Higgins wants. It's more Mulugheta's reputation on the line for getting his clients the most money that would be important to him. It's how he gets future business. If he caves with Higgins what would the rest of his clients think? Would he get as many new clients? Holding out for Higgins and that little extra money for himself is short term thinking. I very seriously doubt Tee stays. Especially with Jamar saying he wants Jefferson to get the bag so he can set the market for him. Jamar is about to get the bag next year. Tee is going to get top 10 money. But I'm not all that worried if we lose Tee. l'll be sad but not worried, outside of Jon Ross, this team has always drafted well at WR. On the other, plenty of highly drafted receivers have busted. If we tag and trade Tee next year, we'd be replacing both Higgins and Boyd in a single season, presumably with Iosivas and Jones. Maybe they both work out great but it would be much safer to keep Tee on hand for 2024 on the tag. If he was tagged again for 2025, he'd get a 20% raise or about 26 mil. Chase would be costing an average in the low 30+ mil range by then. My view is that Reader and Higgins are the most important free agents to hang on to after this season. I'd think we should be able to extend DJ for about what he's currently making, just add 2 years to his deal. Tee will get a big contract from us or somewhere else. It's not really in his interest to carry the injury risk for 3 seasons so he shouldn't scoff at Deebo Samuel type money. Having an elite quarterback with 2 high end receivers is our competitive advantage and we shouldn't give it up lightly. The team will likely lose Boyd and Awuzie after this year. They're still good players but we have their replacements lined up.
