Does Palmer really look that bad?

I did not see the game today and only saw parts of last weeks game vs NE. I know that Carson was ragged on all of last season and I thought he played fairly well. One thing people do not consider about last season is that there were 32 catchable balls dropped on Carson. I remember the game we won @ Baltimore last season and Coats dropped 2 TD's in that game . Chad also fumbled when we were in scoring position. We should have won that game by 2 TD's instead of 17-14. Anyway , I hope he returne to form and have no problem with him having a bad game vs the Ravens because we won. That's all that counts. I think if he plays well we could make a SB run. I hoping he can.

He had a few off throws today. The worst of which was the pass to Chad in the back of the end zone. But there were also a few drops, and TO, Gresham, and Shipley are still new to the offense (although you really wouldn't know it with Shipley, he has been excellent). He was also playing against a pretty good defense.

he didn't have a great game, but the WR/TE's deserve some of the blame. Was just talking about this over at FPL with some Bengals/Ravens fans. My comment:
Carson didn't have a great game, but there were 5 big drops by WR/TE. Carson's taking a lot less heat if those are caught and he's 21-36 for 217 with a TD. Not that he didn't miss a few passes on his own
If TO catches that ball in the endzone and the Bengals win by 12, are as many people freaking out right now?

I think part of it is finding a rhythm. As Jason mentions, there's 3 new working pieces. I can think of two specific pass plays where Carson threw to TO, but he threw it like he throws to Chad. Problem is, Chad breaks back to the ball much quicker than TO does and the pass is off by a foot. I think its those kind of little bugs they are still working out.

Yeah the Offense has the next few games to get right and build momentum/rapport. If they dont get it going against the the next couple "easy" teams, this season wont end up as great as we all envisioned it to be.

Carson looked bad but mention was made on the radio about receivers running wrong routes.
T.O. missed one and was on the sidelines ripping Jordan Palmer a new one.
He couldn't even bitch at the right Palmer.

Shipley also made a nifty grab of a third down pass over the middle.
A yard short on his route.
Rookie.

The back of the endzone incompletion to Chad was mostly on Chad.
If he had trusted his QB to see him, instead of pausing briefly to raise his arm, it would of been a completion. Carson had already thrown the ball at that point. Run Chad.

Palmer also got laid out on the throw as well..

Comment from Carson on that play.

"It wasn’t really a double move. They had us covered, he came in and came back out. I saw the corner outside, and I couldn’t see Chad. I had a guy coming right at me. I basically just threw it high into the back of the end zone. I didn’t see what happened, and I didn’t see the replay. I was just trying to throw it away from 31 and hoped that Chad would see the ball. I don’t know if he saw the ball until the very last second because there was a big defender in between the two of us.”

That's pretty much where I am right now. I was plenty critical of him in the "red zone" thread earlier this afternoon, but I'm anxious to see how he/they fare against three defenses that aren't NE or Baltimore. I'll also agree with your last sentence, and that is that if they're still stumbling over one another after the next three games, the team could be in trouble.

As for Palmer the individual, this is his "put up or shut up" season. If he stays healthy yet ultimately fails, the team will fail, and I'll be ready to hear talk about drafting and grooming his replacement. Hopefully it will be years before it comes to that.

A lot of us gave up on Ken Anderson after Week 1 of the 1981 season, and...

imply because he doesnt get injured doesnt mean he was given all of the opportunities to be successful. he was murdered out there in 2008, had to go 6 linemen plus TE to just force run the ball last year, and are only slightly better off simply for having better short passing game options in shipley and gresham..

the run game is non existent because of the mediocre-at-best line... palmer isnt getting time very often, and is still making plays while geting hit, pulled down, etc...

the day he starts playing like joe flacco and is just throwing shit up and missing wide open guys deep and so on.. its panic time...

the ravens are 6th in points, 2nd in yards and 2nd in passing yards currently... palmer has a passer rating of 93 roughly last week, which is pretty darn good, even with the pick.. it was way lower this week, but he played the 2nd ranked pass defense and 3rd-ish overall defense in the entire league...

its never as cut and dry as fans want to pretend it is "if palmer doesnt do this, this is reality" .....not even close..

im eager to see what the next games bring... if we beat them 3-0 ill have some concerns.. but i dont see aplmer having less than 60% completion and no worse than 2:1 TD:INT ratio...

that with a defense thats hopefully awake now.. is playoff material..

undefeated in the division and 1 game out of first place..... after the last two performances by the defense last week and the oline for the last 3 years... ill take it..

hope to be 4-1 in a month.

Seems whenever I wear my Palmer jersey he sucks.. So away the Jersey goes on Sundays!

On topic, Palmer has kind of looked like an average QB since his injury. He's lost a lot of zip on his throws and seems to be making bonehead decisions.
comment_920820
Yeper. The Bomb he can still throw because his hands didn't shrink. He can still wrap his bananna fingers around the thing and loft it. It's just not gonna go 65 -70 yards any more.

The posts and nines he can throw because they are some touch and some velocity.

The Deep outs, The deep comebacks / hooks, and even the shallow comebacks come out slow and slow. Like a turtle.

Those throws require velocity in this NFL league. Most corners are too fast and too well prepared and will snatch those dead ducks and laugh all the way to the house. Hence the "pick sixes". One of which occurred game one - plus, in addition there were multiple instances in which the Patriot defender dropped another potential interception in the first game.

In this game, the Ravens game, there was a comeback route on and palmer threw it to T.O., but because the ball creeps out, the defender got in front and almost had a pick six . . . thankfully T.O. broke it up - or thats ballgame right there - Ravens.

Those comebacks / deep outs, hook routes are money routes for the Bengals or any N.F.L team for that matter. C.J. works on the comebacks / hooks a lot. C.J gets a lot of yards on those routes. He makes a lot of money on those routes.

If Kiper was unimpressed with Palmers velocity on those routes coming out of the draft, when Palmer was relatively healthy, i'm quite sure he'd be rolling his eyes on those throws now. If I can see it, and you can see it, the tape sees it, the bengals coaches see it - the opposition sees it.

You can be sure the Secondary Coach of the opposition is making it a coaching point during the weeks preparation.

The Arm is Toast.

They chose the easy way on his elbow tendon . . . just letting it heal up. Well guess what if you just let the body do it's thing to heal something up, its gonna do it fast, and useable. Thats why he's lost whatever velocity he had. The tendon was partially tore, stretched, frayed like a bungie cord. What super genious said it would heal up just fine and perfect . . . ? Good as new!!! I'd like to meet him.

If they had chose the Hard way. The Tommy John way, chances are pretty good, real good, see all the Major League Pitchers / and other Quarterbacks that had the procedure done - that he would have gotten his velocity back.

As it stand now he's has a tendon that got tore, frayed, and stretched, and healed itself up. The Body ain't gonna heal it up pretty or Back to perfect. It's gonna heal itself up to useable. Thats why his velocity is off. Way off.

Now not only does he: not make good decisions, radar lock onto his primary target, take sacks easily, have poor accuracry, gets confused easily, but also - he's lost the ability to be effective on one of the BEST money making routes in the NFL.

Also only Carson Palmer gets sacked by Ray Lewis's Ankle. Check the Replay. You know what I'm talking about. LOL

It's time to move on. Sucks though. Because It probally wont' happen. Too many people would look bad. Ego driven people don't like to look bad.

Everyone can see his lame ass throws. Everyone. . .

Just look at anyother quarterback throwing those routes - the Ball has to fucking ZIP - and theirs does. Palmers doesn't.

Don't take the easy way children.

Yeah, Carson was a tinge off at times today against a defense who makes opposing quarterbacks look off all the time. If we're still discussing this after 5 games, then I'll worry.
This.

From my vantage point in the stadium yesterday, it was abundantly clear that both defenses had the other side's number in terms of almost perfect coverage schemes. No one on either side got open much at all. You could tell both Palmer and Flacco had to look off primary receivers often...because the coverage was so tight.

From my vantage point. Palmers arm is dead.

The Tape don't lie.

It's probably the worst in the League.

Timmy Hasselhoff has more zip on his comebacks. Falco. Brady. Clausen. Most backups. and so on.

His arm is noodles. It's so obvious.

Normally I do not become involved in these Palmer sucks threads. However, one or many people need to get a clue about how long it takes to "look off" a wide receiver, throw long, etc... Palmer has nowhere near the time he needs to make the open throw, make a long throw, prevent the sack from occuring, etc...

It is the offensive line (for the most part) that is preventing this offense from going ballistic. The Bengals offense could not be stopped if Palmer only had about half a second more to throw (IMHO), play develop, or receiver to get open.

Carson gets sacked more and in a shorter time than most other QB's in the league. Carson has less time to throw than most other QB's in the league.

To the women that keep calling in after the game to 1530 Homer (my going home from the game radio station), GET A CLUE. Carson does not play defense, does not block, and yes, he does not tackle very well either. Now, if Carson was blocking for the offensive line then it would be his fault and we could all sing Kumbaya around the campfire with your brilliant analysis of the game.

To the fan in front of me calling for Carson's replacement (with Lefavoure ?sp) no matter who was on the field. Yup she did, and she is a lifelong season ticket holder. She called for his replacement last year too. *#&@ you and GET A CLUE.

Here is proof. At the very least it is more proof than what I have seen offered.

http://nfl.fanhouse.com/2009/09/23/which-quarterbacks-hold-the-ball-too-long/

In general, the average sack occurs around 2.7 to 2.8 seconds after the snap of the ball. Consider that the internal clock a quarterback must have--while the timing can depend somewhat on whether it's a four-man rush or an all-out blitz, in general if a quarterback holds the ball for more than three seconds, he's in trouble. If he gets rid of it in less than 2.5 seconds, he will rarely find himself on his back.

HOLDING ON
The 10 quarterbacks who have held the ball the longest on their sacks
Quarterback Average Time Of Sack No. of Sacks
Jason Campbell 3.66 3
Tom Brady 3.6 1
Jay Cutler 3.51 3
Mark Sanchez 3.51 2
Brady Quinn 3.29 9
Kyle Orton 3.27 3
Trent Edwards 3.26 6
JaMarcus Russell 3.22 3
Chad Pennington 3.2 6
Kurt Warner 3.07 3

GETTING RID OF IT

The 10 quarterbacks who have held the ball the shortest on their sacks
Quarterback Average Time Of Sack No. of Sacks
Byron Leftwich 2.09 2
Tony Romo 2.1 1
Peyton Manning 2.29 2
Marc Bulger 2.46 4
Carson Palmer 2.47 5
Joe Flacco 2.52 2
Matt Stafford 2.53 3
Matt Schaub 2.6 2
Matt Ryan 2.62 2
Brodie Croyle 2.62 3

Arm looked fine to me...hard to throw when you can never set your feet. Is Flacco's arm shit too? He had the same issues yesterday.

I think we need to see how the next few games play out against middle-of-the-pack defenses before we pass any snap judgements.
