Luck Returning to Stanford

Recommended Posts

Its interesting that whoever was talking about Luck (mcshay maybe?) talked about about Luck's personality, and its all the same things people complain about Luck for.

Quiet kid, doesn't like a lot of fanfare, didn't make his return a big deal, not a very vocal leader but leads by example.

Dumb decision from my point of view. You are the #1 pick this year, and you wont be next year. It NEVER works out that way. Get #1 pick money while you can, and if scholl is important to you finish it while OTJ.

Every hear of a guy named Sam Bradford? He won a Heisman trophy as a Sophomore at Oklahoma a few years back? Most had him at #1 if he came out. Went back for his junior year and got hurt his first game. Played a little more then had season ending surgery on his throwing shoulder.

Where was he picked in the draft? Anyone? Buehler?

ESPN just reported Andrew Luck is returning to Stanford.

Kid is set for life already. Could probably get a mid 6 figure job with one of the multitude of wealthy Stanford Alumni just doing PR. My guess is few think the CBA deal will get done so he would rather play more college ball, stay sharp and get his STANFORD degree. Besides, Carolina blows. He needs to go to an organization with some history.

yea I was thinking about it a minute ago. The talk of the town is that every team with a new HC is going to be behind the 8-ball if there's any kind of work stoppage because coaches won't have access to the players.

Carolina fired their ENTIRE coaching staff. Can you imagine how screwed they are? Every free agent on that team should run for the hills.

How is that different from any other team picking #1?

Plus he still has time to change his mind if Harbaugh leaves for the NFL.

It won't happen, but.... there's always the Supplemental Draft. Now wouldn't that blow people's minds if he went that route after finding out more about the CBA, Harbaugh's intentions, the possible new coaching staff, etc....

Luck is such a sure bet to go with the No. 1 overall pick in April's draft that the owners of the pick, the Carolina Panthers, effectively put the Denver Broncos on the clock in the No. 2 slot earlier this week. The only hitch: Luck has decided to return to Stanford in the fall as a fourth-year junior, to continue his pursuit of both a Pac-10 championship and a degree in architectural design. He'll open the season as an odds-on favorite to win the Heisman Trophy, and Stanford will be expected to ride his golden arm back into the top ten – that is, assuming he fares better in his return than the last two quarterbacks who turned down a shot to be the No. 1 pick to return to school, Oklahoma's Sam Bradford in 2009 and Washington's Jake Locker last year.

Bradford, the reigning 2008 Heisman winner, injured his shoulder in the first half of the Sooners' first game in '09, and re-injured it a month later, ultimately opting for season-ending surgery with one complete game under his belt. In his absence, Oklahoma plummeted from a national championship frontrunner to the Sun Bowl. For his part, Locker had no real championship ambitions in 2010 with the middling Huskies, but dropped from "etched in stone" as the No. 1 pick to likely the fourth or fifth quarterback off the board after mediocre (and frequently dismal) senior campaign, which included a 49-0 home loss to Luck's Cardinal.

The real risk for Luck, though, isn't falling from the top spot. Bradford eventually went No. 1 last year to the St. Louis Rams, despite his injuries and lack of playing time, as did both Peyton and Eli Manning after returning to school for their senior seasons in 1997 and 2003, respectively. No, the real risk in waiting for Luck is the vast amount of money he stands to lose even as the No. 1 pick in 2012 as opposed to 2011. The NFL is mulling a major change in the rookie pay scale after the '11 season (assuming there is a season, with a looming labor dispute threatening to put the league on ice), which could ultimately cost Luck more than $40 million, and possibly as much as $60 million, even if he's the first player off the board next year. That is one expensive architecture degree.

With Luck back in the pocket and Oregon coming to Palo Alto, though, Stanford is instantly a Pac-10 contender in the fall, and if it somehow keeps Harbaugh in the fold, too, there will be national buzz around the program for the first time since before World War II. That, you cannot buy.

... or Peyton Manning. Oh wait, that doesn't support your theory - nevermind.

He is already the number 1 pick. There will be a rookie wage scale in 2012.... He is going to end up leaving a shit ton of money on the table.....

If school is that important then go back later...

That rookie wage scale might go in place for this year. Which would mean he wouldn't really be leaving a shit ton of money on the table.

He's also an architecture major. Probably the toughest degree program on most campuses because of the hours involved which makes his success at QB even more amazing to me.

Mock draft adjusted after Luck's decision ...

1. Panthers: A.J. Green, WR, Georgia (Previous pick: Andrew Luck)
So Andrew Luck won't be the QB in Carolina next season. It's a bad development for the Panthers, obviously, but what can you do? In this case, Carolina will either ride Jimmy Clausen or add a veteran QB (Vince Young? Donovan McNabb?) -- either way, the Panthers need to give that quarterback some weapons. Green is an absolute stud.
-- Chris Burke

2. Broncos: Prince Amukamara, CB, Nebraska
Champ Bailey's future in Denver is up in the air -- and even with Bailey, the Broncos are still about 10 men short of being a quality unit. Amukamara, who could also be a shutdown cornerback from Day 1, would step in and, if Bailey returns to Denver, immediately give the Broncos the best corner tandem in the league.
-- R.J. White

3. Bills: Ryan Mallett, QB, Arkansas
Ryan Fitzpatrick was better than expected in 2010, throwing for 3,000 yards and 23 TDs after coming on as the Bills starter in Week 3. But the QB position has long been a thorn in the Bills' offense, and the team needs a franchise guy. Mallett could be the next Ben Roethlisberger, which should be enough to pique Buffalo's interest.
-- White

4. Bengals: Da'Quan Bowers, DE, Clemson (Previous pick: A.J. Green)
Cincinnati gladly would have taken Green at No. 4, given that T.O. and Chad Ochocinco likely won't be back in 2011. But instead of finding another option for Carson Palmer, the Bengals jump on arguably the best defensive player available.
-- Burke
