Bengals running back Cedric Benson has made no secret that he’s looking forward to leaving Cincinnati in free agency, and offensive coordinator Jay Gruden says the Bengals will be just fine without Benson.

Gruden told Bengals.com he’s planning a running back-by-committee offense.

“It’s not a bad way to go. Keep guys fresh. They play longer, they’re involved,” Gruden said. “If something happens to one, you know you’ve got a guy that can come in there and be productive. Where you’re not relying heavily on one guy and if something happens to him, you’re like, ‘Oh God, this guy doesn’t have many reps.’ I think it’s important to have guys touch the ball, I believe, as a committee.”
With Benson leaving, the Bengals’ committee is likely to include Bernard Scott, Brian Leonard and Cedric Peerman, and the Bengals have said they’d like to draft a running back. But the committee won’t include Benson, who led the team with 273 carries for 1,067 yards and six touchdowns last season.

With the Bengals expected to part ways with Cedric Benson, offensive coordinator Jay Gruden sounded like he is leaning toward a running back-by-committee approach this season.

The team's website speculated that Cincinnati could split carries between a big-back rookie -- a 205-pounder like Virginia Tech's David Wilson, a 215-pounder like Boise State's Doug Martin and a 200-pounder like Cincinnati's Isaiah Pead -- and returning backup Bernard Scott.

"It's not a bad way to go. Keep guys fresh. They play longer, they're involved," Gruden toldBengals.com. "If something happens to one, you know you've got a guy that can come in there and be productive. Where you're not relying heavily on one guy and if something happens to him, you’re like, 'Oh God, this guy doesn't have many reps.' I think it's important to have guys touch the ball, I believe, as a committee."

Of course, there is someone who could change Gruden's mind. "If you do get a big-time guy like Trent [Richardson, Alabama running back] then I'm not opposed to giving him the ball 30 times," he said.

Hensley's slant: There is virtually no chance that Richardson falls to the Bengals, who have the 17th and 21st overall picks in the first round. It'll be tempting to trade up for a back like Richardson, but I don't think they will. My feeling is the Bengals will take a guard and a cornerback with their first two picks.

1. Richardson is popular: Even though he isn't working out because of recent knee surgery, Richardson said he has been interviewed by all but five of the 32 NFL teams. He's heard from Cleveland, Tampa Bay, Cincinnati and others. As the top running back in the draft, Richardson should draw a lot of interest. It's unlikely the Browns would take him with the No. 4 pick, but if they don't re-sign Peyton Hillis, it's not out of the question for the Browns to take him with the first-round pick (No. 22) they acquired from Atlanta last year in the Julio Jones trade.

The Bucs may be looking to upgrade the backfield despite LeGarrette Blount's success. The most interesting team could be the Bengals. There is a good chance Cincinnati won't re-sign Cedric Benson. Bengals coach Marvin Lewis spoke at a podium and didn't seem to be certain Benson, who is a free agent, will be on the team. Richardson to the Bengals in the first round could be an interesting possibility.

When did he say that?
I doubt he said that - just like when Marvin was talking about him he left open the possibility that Ced would be back here.
Never close the door all the way, for politeness if nothing else.

What is clear is that the coaches want to improve the run game in all its aspects and want more backs involved than Ced likes.
And they aren't looking at him as the way to fix things, at least for now.

We need to add a power back to our current group of Scott, Leonard, and Peerman. Richardson would be great but if he's not available, we could add a Turbin or Ganaway in the middle rounds. That assumes they are comfortable with Scott as the top back.

Turbin seems like a nice guy. He would gel well with the likes of Andy and AJ.

upgrading the line will help upgrade Scott to be the 2nd RB.

Turbin may last to the mid rounds, but Ganaway will be gone by early 3rd at the latest. 1500+ yards for griffin III's Baylor squad gets one noticed, especially since he is a fairly fast back at 240lbs.

I am liking Doug Martin the more I look at him. Great hands, good explosion, makes great cuts, strong build at 215lb and seems to push forward for the critical last yard or two for first downs. If he's around for our pick in Rd2, which may be unlikely, he'll be a Bengal.

Lord. If we do something like this, I hope we just straight up find a replacement for Scott. He proved last season that he shouldn't be seeing a share of anything.

The answer to the RB issues are not currently on the roster. Not that I want to see Benson return but the other three don't equal a cup of bacon grease between em..

Glad you two aren't running the team.

I would think it would be hard to argue that they said anything wrong...

I think Leonard is a terrific third down back, and Scott could be fine if given some interior line help. It was tough sledding inside.

1. They only proved that they couldn't run behind one of the worst run-blocking lines in the league. A lot of good backs would have looked bad also behind that line.

2. I love bacon grease...Mmmmmmm

Imo, the possibilities based on scheme fit are:

Rd 1 - Trent Richardson
Rd 1/2 - Doug Martin (I'd only take him in first if we traded with the Pats (say), and got their 27th pick)
Rd 1/2 - David Wilson (see above)
Rd 2 - Chris Polk
Rd 3/4 - Robert Turbin
Rd 3/4 - Terence Ganaway

ALSO, what about this:

We get rid of both Benson and Scott. Take Turbin AND Ganaway in rounds 3-4. Pass catching in WCO, YAC, and pound it to wear defenses down, all bases covered. Now that would be one heck of a one-two punch!!!
