Why is McLachlan a better fit than Hudson?

Just asking...

It remains to be seen, but if the coaches feel this way then Hudson should be cut. Personally I've never seen anything impressive from Hudson. He's "fine"

Yeah I have Sample making the team playing HBack if you want to call it 5 TEs and no Hback, cool. I think its likely Chris Evans days are numbered.

No no, he makes the team because he's so irreplaceable. It has nothing at all to do with having burned a 2nd round pick on him. Just like Jackson Carman.

Who's a better blocking TE in this team than he?

He's staying this year...

You're missing the point.  The team keeping guys around because of draft investment isn't that outlandish.  Sample is justifiable for other reasons.  Carman, not so much. Further, this notion that Duke Tobin is some kind of roster guru draft mastermind doesn't really hold water.

Draft investment I get.

Blocking ability with this TE group

keeps him here....for now

How I see TE

Gesicki: He is a lock and seen as a slot TE/WR

Sample: He is a lock and seen as a true Y TE, they signed him for 3 years for a reason and it wasn't to get rid of him.

All: He is a lock with very high upside

---------------------

Hudson: Very hard to cut, he is Gesicki's main backup as the move TE. Burrow loves him and he is a plug and play guy on offense. We were reminded in preseason. He is big but doesn't seem to have played a ton of special teams. He seems like he would be a great fit though. Former college QB.

McClachlan: He's already 25 but exactly what any team will want in a backup TE. He's a former walk on who played for Taylor's colleague Jedd Fisch for Arizona. He passed Gronk in all time receptions for a TE at Arizona in his 2 years. Has special teams written all over him with his style. Will have him for 4 years vs Hudson's 1 year.

Gandy: Likely the backup to Sample. Solid run blocker who caught lots to passes on dump offs. Could make the practice squad as he develops as a blocker.

The only thing Evans offers at this point is 3rd string KO returner. Strategically it makes sense to keep 5 TEs as 2 of them are on 1 year contracts, so keeping All, Sample, McLaughlan who have long term contracts gives you room next offseason. Evans is in year 4 I believe, and really doesn't offer anything long term.

Wont happen, they brought him in before and didn't sign him. Seems to not be a fit culturally.

Bengals put in a waiver claim on him last year but he went to a team with a higher priority. I wouldn't be surprised if Bengals signed him this year, just without much signing bonus.

Yes that happend when Reader went down during the season IIRC. They also brought him in for a visit in March when they brought in Becton so they had a chance to sign him then but didn't.
