Ok fine, no I do not believe this team gets to a SB without Jamar.

Q: how guaranteed is guaranteed here, exactly?

If he gets this deal and then wakes up March 1st 2025, does a fatty bong rip and decides to go all Ricky Williams at a monastery in Thailand instead of playing football.. what then?

In other news, the Cowboy's just named Cooper Rush their back up QB relegating Trey Lance to 3rd string

along with his fully guaranteed $5+million contract.  Dak Prescott staring at FA and Micah Parsons (whose

in the same boat as Chase and just as valuable on defense as Chase is on offense), yet he fully participated

in all training camp and preseason.

Chase isn't going about it the wrong way at all though?!  🤪

Ja’Marr Chase remains out of practice for Bengals

Published September 2, 2024 02:30 PM

Bengals wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase kicked off this week the same way he ended last one.

Reporters at the open portion of the team’s Monday practice session sent word that Chase was present when the team took the field, but that he is in street clothes rather than a uniform and that he remains out of drills.

Chase is looking for a new contract that would put him in the neighborhood of the ones that Justin Jefferson and CeeDee Lamb have signed in recent months. He reported to training camp, but did not practice and returned to the sideline after taking part in one practice early last week.

With less than a week left before the Bengals open the season against the Patriots, the question in Cincinnati will be whether Chase has any intention of playing without getting that deal in place. Quarterback Joe Burrow got a new deal shortly before last season started, although he only missed practice time because of a calf injury that hampered him during the early part of the season as well.

It’s unclear if something similar is a possibility for Chase, but it’s clear Burrow and the Bengals will be in much better shape if something does come together.

While the Bengals could tear up Chase's current contract, any new contract would most likely incorporate the as yet unplayed seasons of his rookie deal, ie an add-on. So, if he signs for 4 years X million dollars the seasons covered would be 2026-2029. He'd no doubt get a big signing bonus, which would cash flow to him in 2024 and be prorated over 5 years for salary cap purposes. If he gets say, a 35 mil signing bonus, that would add 7 mil to his cap numbers for 2024 and 2025 rookie contract hits then 7 mil more in SB hits for 2026-2028.

The Bengals can easily afford to pay Chase a contract with a 35 mil per year new money value. Tee is on the cap this year for 22 mil, BJ Hill for 10 and Mike Hilton for 6. They are all probably going into their final season as Bengals. Ja'Marr is scheduled to make 22 mil next year on his rookie 5th year option. So even if the Bengals front-loaded the payout, it would fit easily. That's not even accounting for however much the overall cap increases for next year.

I suspect there are two separate issues holding things up. One is his fair value. He wants 35 mil. The team may be offering something between St Brown and Lamb, ie 31-32 mil. The other is guarantees. Jefferson got 110 mil in guarantees because basically the first 3 years of his deal are guaranteed. Since Chase is already under contract for the next 2 years via his rookie deal, he'd have to settle for a lower guaranteed total with only the first year of his new deal included. Or the team would have to effectively guarantee his pay for 5 seasons, which is a very long time in the NFL. First round rookies get 4 years of guarantees when drafted, with the better ones getting a 5th year option exercised (which is fully guaranteed).

Since he's getting paid a year earlier than Jefferson, Lamb, Aiyuk, or St Brown are getting their bags, Chase should discount his demands a bit. Waddle got paid and was taken the pick after Chase. Ja'Marr is a better player so he should get at least a couple million more per year than Waddle. But that still leaves him short of 30 mil per season in new money.

IMO a fair deal would be something like 4 new years with 120 mil in new money with 30 mil of it paid this year as signing bonus. The new contract would incorporate the 2 existing years, with the first new season (2026) salary of 20 mil fully guaranteed at signing. That would give him something like 75 mil in guarantees at signing (including the remaining money on his rookie deal) and career earnings of a minimum of 102 million even if he suffered a career ending injury on the first play of 2024.

Let me just play devils advocate here.

Soi next year without Tee, J'Marr gets doubled.

Who's JBs other option?

You think Joe can't find other options?

We don't have the cap space to pay out $30 million this year as we only have $10.8 in cap space currently.  BUT, the signing bonus can be spread

out over the amount of years in the new contract.  Instead of giving him a 2026 salary of $20 million fully guaranteed at signing, (that would be a

cap killer), give him an a fully guaranteed "option" bonus in 2025.  An option bonus can also be spread out over the length of the contract just like

a signing bonus.

Enough bullshit, it's game week and the practices matter.  Not amused.  This team has bigger goals than Ja'Marr Chase getting his signing bonus a year early.

Maybe. Perhaps Sleepy Burton develops. Or Iosivas. It’s going to be a crapshoot regardless.

https://www.fox19.com/2024/09/02/bengals-have-plan-place-if-jamarr-chase-does-not-play-sunday-zac-taylor-says/

Bengals have plan in place if Ja’Marr Chase does not play Sunday, Zac Taylor says

CINCINNATI (WXIX) - “We’ll just take it day to day,” that is what Zac Taylor said when asked if Ja’Marr Chase will play on Sunday.

Chase, who did practice during training camp, is seeking a new contract.

The Bengals star receiver did not participate in Monday’s practice. He was there, but was not in his practice uniform.

Coach Taylor said after practice the team has a plan in place if Chase does sit out of the Week 1 game against the New England Patriots.

If Chase does play, the Bengals head coach said he feels confident Chase could play close to all of the plays.

Other notes from Taylor’s Monday media session:

  • Dax Hill will start at cornerback against New England
  • Trent Brown is the starting right tackle

It's a bitch to have a plan in place .

Don't like it but they have to.

There has to be a plan in case any player can’t play.  Injuries happen all the time.  It will be next man up, and that guy had better be ready.

And, yes, I’m sure it affects the game plan to some extent. Pats also have to plan for Chase, or no Chase.

Let's say Ja'Marr goes for 1,800 yds this year, and 15 TDs, then next year he will not cost 35.1 (just above Jefferson) but will ask for 40 to set the new bar. That's 5 more per year x 4 = 20 million more possibly.

The point of signing Ja'Marr now is he's willing to take 1 penny more than Jefferson. If he explodes this year and the Bengals win the Super Bowl, he's going to want way more than that.

But of course the biggest benefit of extending Ja'Marr right now is the Bengals have a true shot at the Super Bowl this year if he plays, and if he doesn't play they do not. This is probably the best "window" year the Bengals are going to have with the Tee tag, so why not go "all in" for New Orleans and have a happy Chase who is going 110% and not worried about injury or not going full speed because he's making "Business decisions" for next year's guarantee bonus.

The salary cap is projected to increase $5 mil next year and more after that.  Again, the money has to be spent so Chase getting paid a little more isn’t going to have much of an effect.

Yeah, the Bengals should pay him just like they did Burrow.

I hope he holds out until he gets a new deal, this why the Bengals can't have nice things because they don't know what they're doing.
