That number is pretty much what they have allotted for TJ give or take a Mill, and figure they have 4-5 mill allotted for a RB(Ward/Benson). If mike can get TJ back for what he considers a fair number (think 4yrs 28 mill with 12 -14 guaranteed), he'll do it and go with a Grove, Cook or rookie at center. It all starts with line play and you can't have a weak spot in the middle of the line and still have consistent success.

Jamie_B
If we can get Birk to a 3 year deal and draft someone like a Caldwell in the 3rd, I'd be pretty happy with that.
Inigo Montoya
Birk's the last big name available. Anybody heard any news on Jake Grove? I remember hoping the Bengals would get him in 2004.
Sigfox09
I'll be sick if we go into next season without a veteran center...seriously Cook and Santucci; these two guys couldnt beat out Ghuichec and he was horrid Its amazing that we have the cap space and didnt even make an attempt to get Brown! Birk was the guy I liked initially in free agency but I got on the Brown bandwagon due to the age difference. Still, Birk has a few good years left in him and would be a great leader on the OL. Its just such an important position. I also hate going into a draft with such a huge glaring hole because it really ties your hands. You end up reaching for a guy or having to burn valuable picks to tradeup. Or, since every team out there knows what you need, you have some team trade one pick ahead of you and nab your guy. Not to mention that even if things do work out well and you can grab Unger or Mack at the top of the second, you are still going to have to rely on a rookie to lead your line and deal with the inevitable rookie mistakes. scharm
Jesus, Hobson could come out with a whole bunch Headlines for Wood. I think we'd have to keep Johnson if they landed Wood. Anyway, clearly I was wrong on the value of Jason Brown. I didn't and kinda still don't think he's worth 7 million, but it is what it is. I would like to raise the point that recently San Diego always has people wanting their back up RBs. Sure they are talented, but I also think they get great line play both protection and run game. Mike Goff and I think Newberry their center is a FA. Goff would still be a good addition for the interior line and opens things up on draft day for them. Newberry of course would do the same. Le Tigre
I've thought Newberry might be a good, short-term, option. Smart, strong jose...with a mean streak a mile long. Goff is an OK idea...but it still means rearranging the line deck chairs--something that ML may not want to do unless he has to.

oldschooler
Birk 'Laboring' With His Decision Monday, March 02, 2009 Posted By Mike Florio 10:41 PM Free-agent center Matt Birk has spent eleven seasons with the Vikings, and he's a native of St. Paul. Entrenched in the Twin Cities, Birk likely doesn't want to leave. As I typed that, I realized that it sounded familiar. It sounded familiar because Birk told me that when I interviewed him three years ago. "Oh, absolutely," Birk said in response to the question of whether he'll retire with the Vikings. "I was born here, I'll die here. I don't want to leave." Birk reportedly is visiting at least one other team, but agent Joe Linta won't say who it is, according to Sean Jensen of the St. Paul Pioneer Press. Either way, a decision is expected this week. "Matt is laboring with the decision and really wants to make up his mind by the end of the week," Linta said. Our guess? The Vikings know that Birk was born there, will die there, and doesn't want to leave. And they're squeezing him in the same way the Cardinals are squeezing Kurt Warner. And so it's possible that other teams won't make serious offers to Birk if it's assumed that Linta will simply take the number back to the Vikings and see if they'll match it. Regardless, here's hoping that the two sides work this thing out. Birk doesn't belong in any other uniform, and the Vikings should pay him fairly to make it happen.
http://www.sportingnews.com/blog/real_scou...th_his_decision

Let’s also not rule out the fact that agent Joe Linta represents not only Birk but also Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco. Though it’s not the kind of connection that makes Birk’s decision to sign with Baltimore a fait accompli (gratias, Tiki), the fact that Linta does business with both men is the kind of thing that could prompt Linta to try to help grease the skids to get a deal done — especially since Linta has a vested interest in Flacco not being regularly assaulted by nose tackles who might be able to pick up and throw some seventh-round slappy at the young quarterback’s legs. So, basically, its time for the Vikings to stop playing hardball (or, as the case may be, Chilly ball) with a hometown hero who doesn’t want to leave and offer him a fair deal to keep him in purple . . . and white and yellow
http://www.profootballtalk.com/2009/03/03/...isit-baltimore/

sparky151
The veteran center options are diminishing pretty fast. It sure looks like the Bengals are expecting a rookie or one of last year's backups to be our starting center in 2009. That doesn't sound very promising.
