Smith Breaks Foot

Well it appears I was wrong about Andre being eligible for the PUP.

I asked Joe Reedy about it, and he replied . . .

Well, I guess it is a good thing the Bengals
still have the 2 week roster exemption.
But that runs out September 14th.

*EDIT*

Or is it the 12th? I read the 14th somewhere.
But he practiced Sunday the 30th. And 14 days
from that would be September 12th. Which is
the day before Opening Day.

No offense, but blah, blah, blah, "the sky is falling", blah blah blah.

Of course they can use him, but with Collins and Whitworth, and 30 days of practice, I think they long since stopped counting on him to be a factor, anytime soon. This just cements it. It doesn't materially change the outlook for this club, which will rise or fall on Carson Palmer. And I think Collins can pass protect as well as Smith would have. It may hurt the running game down the road.
I never said the season was over or the sky was falling newbie, just that the idea that the Bengals were not counting on him much is laughable. When you draft an olineman with the #6 pick you expect him to not only play his rookie season but play rather well. Of course it materially changes the outlook of the club. We don't have much depth at oline as it is and now our franchise tackle won't be ready for the season opener and most likely not until game 3 or 4.

This isn't baseball, a slow start can pretty much end a season by the end of November. I do think Collins is a good player but now we are pretty much down to 2 decent starters and roadkill at that position until Smith can belatedly get up to speed.

The offense rises and falls with Carson but Carson has to have the blocking in place and a decent running game to be the pro bowl threat we all know he can be. A healthy ready Smith would have improved both. This team has not made it a season with 2 healthy starters at tackle in a long time let alone 3 good ones. Losing Smith is not small potatoes.

Ooohhh, "newbie", I am wounded.

I have been a member of this board a long time (two years), but don't post a ton.

The depth chart for the o-line is what it was five days ago, which was good enough to project them to around .500, and still is. When the Smith holdout dragged on as long as it did, it changed their calculus for what he could do to help and when. It had to, by necessity.

So they rely on Collins. Well, they were relying on Collins anyway.

I still think they have access to Smith by after the break, so, again, I don't see the material change to things, other than Bengals fans bunching panties, as we are wont to do as a fanbase...

Injuries happen. This team needs to roll with them better than they have in the past.

I would guess that is pretty optimistic thinking. I can't imagine a big guy breaking anything and only missing a couple weeks.

Careful now, there's another side to that argument with even more successes in the 2nd and 3rd rounders with names I'm too lazy to look up. Hell I'd take even the potential of additional 'Reys' and 'Michael Johnsons' any day.

If we didn't have bad luck, we would have none at all. -_-

Chad Johnson and Corey Dillon immediately come to mind....

In "Marvin Speak" a few weeks probably means that Andre Smith is lying dead in the gutter somewhere.

Yeah, Marvin's "out for a few weeks" sure sounds optimistic...in Marvin-speak that may mean the IR

I agree mostly, but what bothers me is that this occurred (according to the Bengals, if it can be believed) during a non-contact drill and also by all accounts, he hasn't been asked to do much physically at all since he's signed.

Bad timing?
Unlucky?
Lack Of Conditioning?
Collins stomping his foot?
All Of the Above?

It's one of those, but being overworked by the coaches in an attempt to "catch him up" doesn't seem to be one of them, unless the team is lying, which is possible.

Thanks for the holdout, Keels. It really paid off, didn't it? And now, your boy won't hit most of those first-year escalators so your commision will be cut, you greedy, incompetent, asswipe.

This just sucks.

I expect this to keep him out for a minimum of the first half of the season.

Our First Round Draft Pick jinx continues...

so.. a few weeks.. = 10+ weeks in your mind?

Bengals rookie OT Andre Smith is expected to miss two weeks with a stress fracture in his left foot, according to a source with knowledge of the situation.

The stress fracture, which Smith suffered Tuesday, likely will keep him off the field for seven to 10 days, and then he is scheduled to resume normal work.

Smith, a first-round draft pick who just signed a contract with the Bengals, had drawn concerns about his conditioning even before his holdout, so getting him in game shape was going to take time.

Smith's injury is very similar to the stress fracture suffered by Broncos RB LaMont Jordan, who rested his foot for a week and then returned to practice. But Smith carries considerably more weight as a tackle, so his recovery could take a little longer.

On the third day, Smith is injured
By Scott Priestle, CNATI.com Posted September 1, 2009 5:05 PM ET

Bengals rookie tackle Andre Smith suffered a broken left foot Tuesday during a non-contact drill, an injury that will sideline him at least a few weeks and could torpedo his debut season.

The injury occured during the team's final practice before an exhibition game Thursday against Indianapolis, and only Smith's third practice since ending a 30-day holdout. He signed a four-year contract Sunday afternoon.

"Andre suffered a small fracture in his left foot during a non-contact drill," coach Marvin Lewis said in a statement. "Our medical staff tells me the injury will not require surgery. It's too soon to closely predict how long it will be before he can return to practice, but it looks like he's going to miss a few weeks."

Smith played right tackle with the second-string line at the start of practice, which is all media are allowed to view. Players were not wearing pads. The final practice before a game is generally shorter and less physical than the previous two days, in an attempt to limit wear and tear on players' bodies.

Even before the injury, it was uncertain what type of impact Smith would have this season. He is switching from left tackle at Alabama to right tackle in the NFL, and by holding out for most of training camp he missed his best chance for intense instruction with the coaching staff. By the time he is healthy enough to practice again, the team will be immersed in weekly game preparation, so it will be more difficult for a rookie to catch up to his veteran teammates.

Anthony Collins will start at right tackle. He played mostly left tackle as a rookie last season, including six starts late in the season, and he was expected to back up Smith at right tackle and Andrew Whitworth at left tackle. He is not the road-grading run blocker that Smith is expected to be, but he is more polished as a pass blocker.

The injury is the latest in a series of misadventures for Smith, who at one point last season seemed a leading candidate to be the No.1 overall pick in the draft after a decorated career at Alabama.

He was suspended for the Sugar Bowl for improper contact with an agent; left the NFL scouting combine early, without informing teams of his plans; was widely mocked for working out shirtless before scouts at Alabama's pro day, showing off a less-than-ideal physique; switched agents twice; then missed most of the preseason as his agent and the Bengals disagreed about what was a fair contract for the sixth overall pick in the draft.

Smith was the second-last rookie to sign a contract. The only remaining holdout is receiver Michael Crabtree, the 10th overall pick by San Francisco.

Again, the idea that we draft an Olineman at #6 then pretend its no big deal that he won't start the beginning of the season and may not get any real practice in until September is a joke. You continue to skirt around what was the main point of my first post and that was that losing Smith is a big deal for this franchise. Do you think the 49ers are saying, "Well, the depth chart at WR is the same as it was 5 days ago so not having Micheal Crabtree available in no biggie." If Smith is what many on this board believe him to be and he was the #6 pick then he BETTER BE a much better player than Collins.

Collins is a backup/marginal starter on most teams. He has done alright in the preseason but his prior performance paints him as average at best.

Losing your top draft choices in never easy to roll with. We addressed an important need in the draft and now that pick is of little use to use the first quarter of the season. Losing your top talent makes you worse, not the same or better.

With the schedule we have this year, we really need to put together a playoff type season. Starting slow due to continued O line problems won't get it done.

cute evaluation of Collins, and missing andre sucks, but the world doesnt end.. a rookie andre and a prepared collins are about 1 skillset point apart. only change is instead of starting week one, he may start mid season..

and will likely be available for depth and situation stuff come week 4-6..

acting like the fucking planet just exploded cause our #6 pick is hurt and missed camp is ridiculous..

they said moreno is back to practice in week but smith might take longer cause he's a lot bigger. but don't running backs make more cuts and run a lot wilder than a OL would ? doesn't make sense to me in a way. but the good news is he's not out for the year. just sucks that he needs all the practice he can get.

This sucks but it isn't the end of the world. Andre will probably not need a cast, just a boot for 10 days. He can still go to position meetings, learn the playbook, learn how to watch film, etc. Given how much camp he missed, he probably wasn't going to become the starter for at least a month anyway. This will push that back a week or two but it's not a huge problem. Just make sure he's healed and don't rush him back too fast.

Ah well. It wasn't like he was going to play anytime soon anyway.

Fuck, he's supposed to be a tough big boy...wrap that fucker in a foot-club and throw his ass out there!

So, how does this affect his ability to get himself down on his weight?

Yikes, this sucks ass.
