Another outcast who wasn't wanted by his old team.

Didn't we take in 1 or 2 (or 6) guys like this recently and turned them into quality contributors???

This smells like another potential slam dunk based on recent history... (Benson, Crocker, Roy Williams, Tank, T.O,)

I think a lot of Jags were surprised by this move...... i think it will be a great move for us......

Eh, this trade is ok but we shouldn't count on Nelson for much. Personally I would have made Morgan Trent the backup FS. Nelson was a great college player but has been repeatedly abused in the NFL. That Titans game was not his worst, he was torched repeatedly by the Colts 3rd and 4th receivers last year.

it is true that Nelson has looked bad the last couple of years, but his problems are all mental/attitude. I'd much rather try to fix those type of problems than take a flyer on a guy who has been slowed by injury.

Nelson looked pretty damn good his rookies season, and he has started ever since. I like him a lot as a back up. In fact I like him a lot period, but I am biased from watching him play for the Gators.

crocker looked like total dosgshit for the dolphins and wasnt he even cut by the browns? and he is our starter... nelson started with more talent, system, sttitude, coaches, etc... all factors in a players performance...

good addition, probably 2nd best safety on the team currently... might be best once he is in the system for a bit...

I was thinking of Dexter Jackson .

Eh, if you're trying to say more hype than bite than I am possibly on board. DJax was a declining player for us. But Nelson is younger and due to Zimmer, possibly hungrier.

It's Nelson for Jones and a conditional draft pick.

I wonder what the conditional pick entails ? Any educated guesses ?

Probably something like a 7th round pick if he's on our roster at some point during the season, increasing to a 6th rounder if he starts X number of games.

Bengals trade corner for safety; What next?
By GEOFF HOBSON

Updated: 10:30 p.m.

When the Bengals traded for Jaguars safety Reggie Nelson in exchange for cornerback David Jones and a conditional draft pick Saturday, the deal gave them another big-time player in defensive backfield already teeming with it.

Like many of his new teammates, Nelson is a guy with a lot of talent trying to jump-start his career after a promising start that stalled. Nelson joins Chinedum Ndukwe backing up starters Roy Williams and Chris Crocker in a secondary that has five first-round picks on a defense that has six first-rounders.

The Bengals kept just three safeties at Saturday's 53-man cutdown, so they were anticipating making some kind of move. Now instead of six cornerbacks, they have five corners and four safeties with Crocker able to play corner in a pinch.

The Bengals were also apparently mulling a trade for a fullback but weren't looking to give up two draft picks with the Nelson deal on the table. They opted to scour the waiver wire and if they put in a claim they'll find out if they got him shortly after noon.

But since they claim 21st, that could put the Bengals on the outside looking in for anyone who has some talent. Another spot they could use is an experiened backup guard-center.

But don't look for any vested veterans of any kind before opening day. That way the Bengals won't have to guarantee a full season's salary for a backup player.

Posted by hobsonschoice1 Posted on September 4, 2010 – 9:07 pm

So the Bengals did end up keeping a former first-round pick of the Jaguars after all on Saturday's NFL cutdown day.

But it wasn't wide receiver Matt Jones, released earlier in the day as the Bengals made room for Jerome Simpson and Quan Cosby.

It turned out to be safety Reggie Nelson, acquired for cornerback David Jones and a conditional draft pick about 30 minutes after the 6 p.m. deadline to get rosters to 53.

In the wake of the season-ending injury to Gibril Wilson and the decision to cut all three veterans vying to take his place as one of the four safeties, the Bengals turned to the Jaguars No. 1 pick from 2007.

The Bengals know the 5-11, 206-pound Nelson well.

The move now gives the Bengals secondary five first-round picks and one they almost had when the Jaguars took Florida's Nelson with the 21st pick. The Bengals ended up taking Michigan cornerback Leon Hall at No. 18, but had Nelson on their radar as one of their Plan Bs if Hall slipped through.

He ended up tying Hall to lead all NFL rookies with five interceptions that season.

Now Nelson joins Hall and three other first-rounders in the Bengals secondary. There is Johnathan Joseph at the corner opposite Hall, a '06 first rounder, as well as 2005 first-rounder Adam Jones at the third corner and 2002 first-rounder Roy Williams at strong safety.

"Trade great for us," texted head coach Marvin Lewis on Saturday. "Acquiring a young player with tremendous upside and two years left on his contract."

The Bengals kept just three safeties at Saturday's 53-man cutdown, so they were anticipating making some kind of move. Now instead of six cornerbacks, they have five corners and four safeties with safety Chris Crocker able to play corner in a pinch.

Nelson had a big rookie year with five of his seven career interceptions but didn't seem to adapt to what new defensive coordinator Mel Tucker did with him last year. Tucker moved him all over, including into slot corner, and he even started one game at left corner.

But he's advertised as a free safety with good range. In 42 starts with the Jags, Nelson had 162 solo tackles, one sack, and two forced fumbles. With special teams captain Kyries Hebert among Saturday's cuts, Nelson will more than likely be asked to contribute in the kicking game. Four of his 18 special teams tackles came last season in a year he started 14 games before he was replaced in the next to last game of the season.

The Bengals picked up Jones on this weekend three years ago when they plucked him off waivers from the Saints. They got a lot of bang for their buck. He started seven of 33 games and had 47 tackles and eight passes defensed.

He was Cincinnati's third corner in 2008 but got supplanted by rookie Morgan Trent last year after he missed virtually all of the preseason and the first four games of the regular season with a broken foot.

After going 18 years without making a player-for-player trade, the Bengals have now made one before each of the last two seasons. In May 2009 they picked up Rams running back Brian Leonard for defensive tackle Orien Harris

Robbery for who? David Jones was a waiver wire pick up, the only thing we are really giving up is the draft pick, which nobody knows at this point what that is. Nelson was a former first round pick. As much as I like David Jones, were the ones doing the robbing.

no kidding. Considering David Jones was going to be cut, you're basically getting Nelson for a conditional draft pick that likely is no better than a 5th, at that.

For some reason I always though Jones would be a good fit for the jags. They seem to have a thing for guys with dredlocks.

I do. With the injury history to Roy and Crocker, and even Chinny, we weren't going to go 6 and 4 in the secondary. Frankly, I"m surprised we're only on 4 safeties right now. Maybe they think Ghee can back it up. That or another one is coming.
