Bengals keeping Nugent

Recommended Posts

One thing that's gotten a lot less attention this year than the defensive struggles is how bad the special teams have been overall (currently #25), and not just Nugent. From 2011-2015, our ST units have been 12th or better in the league and usually around 7th (http://www.footballoutsiders.com/stats/teamst2011). The last time we had an ST unit this bad was 2010 (ranked #28).
Anyways, if we look at the Bengals FG points above average (average calculated over all kickers for each kick distance), the results are:
  • 2010: -7.4 (most of this poor performance should be attributed to the kicker we signed after Nugent went on IR)
  • 2011: 5.9
  • 2012: 5.9 (split between Nugent and Josh Brown)
  • 2013: -1.5
  • 2014: -2.6
  • 2015: 1.5
  • 2016: -7.9
Looks like an average kicker who had a pretty good 2011 and a worse than usual 2016. FG kickers seem to be struggling quite a bit this year, so there are more negative entries than usual (average is calculated over multiple seasons). Nugent is the 15th highest paid kicker in the league (http://overthecap.com/position/kicker/) so it seems the Bengals are paying for an average kicker and getting average kicker performance in response. If Nugent reverts to his usual form next year, then it shouldn't be a big deal, but if this gets into his head, and he keeps shaking XPs on a regular basis, I think we need to make a change.

And if pigs could fly...Nugent and the rest...you all know who they are... need a one way ticket out of town. No team or fan base should be holding their breath whenever their kicker goes for an Extra point.... Next season...seriously...your saying....next season....

i cant believe they arent picking up one of those great flawless kickers sitting on the street... cause they definitely exist... its not like a bunch of teams are having kicker issues and only one replaced theirs and he missed a XP in his first game... or anything...

That guy has a better career FG percentage than Nugent.

That's great & all but we could be paying some schmuck league minimum to shank kicks.

Nugent has proven over the years he can make Kicks, yes he has had issues as of late, but does everyone here really think he's going to keep missing EP's? I seriously doubt he misses another EP the rest of this season and next season

Should we cut AJ green because he had an easy drop vs the Broncos that probably would have sealed the game? This honestly could have cost us a playoff spot, I say we cut him and go sign a guy who isn't on an NFL roster to play WR.

Didn't even make it another game, your boy has the yips on XPs and it's probably going to cost him his job.

My God Nugent really really can't be here next season. Nor the special teams coach that thinks he should be. SEE YA emoji112.png

How do you know it was Simmons and not Marvin?

Lol, welp I think Nugent is a goner. Personally I think they should just sign an extra point specialist, named Chad Johnson.

Chadwick was actually there and introduced before the game as part of an old timer's reunion game.  Also Rudi Johnson.  They should have had Bob and Pete, too, and had four big Johnsons on the field at the same time.

Also there were Jim Breech and Shayne Graham and, yes, there were shouts of "suit him up" from the stands.

Ironic funny when Nuge and the Sparrow kicker both hit an upright, Nuge's went in, the other guy's did not.

Yeah, it would be Clueless Lewis deciding if it was a one point kick or a two point attempt just like its Marvswallow who decides field goal or punt.

One thing I noticed that when Nuge misses and is doing the Walk of Shame back to the bench being booed my 60,000 people, its Adam Jones who runs on to the field to console or show a little support (or threaten to punch him in the throat).  No Andy, no Huber, et al, but Pacman.  I think that is a real show of class and what being a part of a team is all about.  Another of the numerous reasons why Adam Jones is on my personal list of All Time Favorite Bengals.

He also goes out on to the field when Nuge makes a kick of any sort, too.

For all the crap he gets, Adam Jones is one cool guy.

yea, vet minimum for mike would be 985k, mikes salary is 1.2mil, 215k savings is a huge deal, i know... even a rookie min is less than a mil difference. we have 6.4 mil in cap space... this is pointless.

also, mike is tied for first, miss-less for 10-20(0/0), 20-30, 30-40, and missed 2 40-50 kicks, same as 12 other nfl kickers have missed... FGs arent a big concern, 50+ misses arent a cause for concern.

replacing him for half a season with an unknown is risky and pointless, and XP seem to be a mental issue given the FG stats, so youd imagine by seasons end or in the offseason that issue goes away as well..

there is a problem with mike, but there isnt a sure fix in FA or in the waiting game, but salary is a joke of a response.

there are certainly some bigger salary to production gaps on this team....

Adam Jones is cool but Pacman is a douchbag.

Ok, so the point of replacing him now with an all-but-lost season, in which he has had a direct hand in at least 3 losses, and a likely large-scale tryout next year is not to try and win this year or to get Nugent out of the building "because misses"... it's because the NFL, according to Marvin *specifically*, is about performing.  Competition.  Winning the job.  Mike has not done that in any way, shape or form this season, and it sends a terrible message to the other guys working their asses off and getting reamed for making small mistakes that Nugent has a special pass because... what?  He's a kicker?  He deserves a second (third, fourth, fifth, etc etc) chance?  We all know it must have something to do with MB because Marvin has sent guys packing for less in the past.  Yeah he has also given kickers extra chances as well but I think that's partly his trust in Darrin Simmons as much as anything, but this is getting to a Brad St. Louis level of embarrassing.  The culture aspect matters.

Has anyone seen the clip, I think it was from a "A Football Life" episode about Jimmy Johnson, wherein he says he cut a kicker after missing ONE kick, after he came back to the sideline and saying "sorry coach, I just lost confidence there as I was about to kick it".  Jimmy (paraphrasing):  "If a kicker loses confidence, he's no good to me."  Well, I'd say Mikey lost confidence weeks ago.

Most missed FG's in the NFL does not add up to "average"

That is statistically, definitively the WORST.  Terribad. Dude is missing extra points FFS, every game lately.

If you're saying the team has bigger problems, I hear that. More generally speaking, "the alternative might be worse!" is how the team got where it is now.

Sunglasses is actually right for a change. Until Nugent retires or disowns the buckeyes, he will be back. Or some owner that is a bigger buckeye fan than MB signs him. After a huge bidding war.

Nahhhh... however before the game started last Sunday (not sure if you made it) there was a huge easter egg.  They introduced the former players and there were two kickers, Jim Breech and Shayne Graham.  When they introduced Chadwick, he was wearing a baseball cap with the number 3 on it, a kicker's number.  So it was his stealthy way of telling us that HE will be returning as the Bengals new kicker.  Yes siree Bob, boy howdy.

Nugent has missed the most kicks of any kicker in the NFL this year and kickers are replaced all the time. It's likely that he won't be back next year so it makes sense to try to fix the problem now instead of the beginning of next year.

I don't think that's RhodeIsland. If it is, I retract all negative comments and she can post whatever she wants.

This is the definition of mediocrity, which is how I would summarize the Bengals in one word under Lewis. It's an improvement from when he arrived, no doubt but not the results most fans are comfortable with and willing to settle for.

This is a pretty good kicker fight, but not nearly as good as it used to be on the old Bengals Insider board.  Shane Graham's sister used to drop by to tussle with anyone who crapped on her bro.  It was some good stuff.

FWIW, there is no justifying keeping Nugent.  He is an aging and deteriorating kicker who is pretty much the worst in the league at this point.  Time to start the tryouts now.
