RIP Pete Rose

Recommended Posts

Between the lines, Pete was everything you wanted in a ballplayer. He wasn't blessed with particularly great size or speed, nor with the greatest arm. But his will to succeed and to win was probably unmatched in any other player I've ever seen. No mental lapses. No showboating. No dogging it. Ever. Just 100% focus and 100% hustle 100% of the time. I doubt there was ever a more accurate nickname in MLB history.

Posting this here since the Reds section isn't as visited.

Time for MLB to do the right thing and put him in the hall.

The right thing would have been to put him in a few years ago

Fuckin shame.

Why do it.now that he's passed?

At one point, Pete held the MLB record for number of MLB records held.

It's unforgivable that the man died without the recognition he so richly deserved, and Cooperstown will always be a hollow shell of an excuse.  Even if he is posthumously honored it's too little too late.

Pete was baseball.  Baseball was Pete.  Without one, the other is a hollow shell. MLB should hang it's head in shame that they chose to do this.

Sure should have been done years ago.

I think the understated assumption was he wouldn't get in till he passed.

It needs to happen.

So they'll put him in soon,?

For who's benefit?

Sure as hell not Pete

Would have loved to hear his speech at the HOF once elected.

Maybe more fans go to Cooperstown to see his bust but it's a bad look for baseball to have kept him out for 38;yrs.

Disgusts me to no end..

A very sad day for all Reds fans.  As many, we grew up watching him play as Charlie Hustle and help bring the city the ultimate joy by helping the Big Red Machine win the World Series.  I grew up listening to the Reds on radio as basically, my whole family was born and raised in the city of Cincinnati.  It is a damn shame he was not allowed to be in the HOF.  MLB should be ashamed that they did not allow him in when all they do nowadays is advertise Gambling.  Sickening to say the least.  Thanks for the memories, Charlie Hustle.  You were the greatest of all time in my book.  RIP HIT KING.  You will be missed.

Lots of wonderful Reds fan memories for Pete… but mine are for his time with my favorite baseball team: the Phillies.

He was pivotal in the final recast of a long-time losing franchise, ultimately achieving a World Series title in 1980. A few years later, he was joined by a few old friends for another WS run

And he actually did make a HoF, sort of: despite all sorts of resistance from MLB, he did join the Phillies Wall of Fame a few years back.

I know you love Philly, but Pete IS Cincinnati.

Posting photos of him in anybody else's uniform is worse than Jordan as a Wizard

Jordan never led the Wizards to anything .

Pete was an intrical part of the Phillies winning a World Championship.

He'll Allways be the greatest Red but

Philly loved him too.

I have an uncomfortable amount of Pete Rose signed memorabilia, I was broke, I loved pete rose, and he did a signing every 5 minutes, met him in vegas, cincinnati, and columbus, always super kind. Have a few pics taken with him.

not putting him in is such a crock of shit, i barely tuned in for JR's speech, i would have tuned in for petes for sure. I may have mad the trip.

He has signed a billion baseballs "im sorry i bet on baseball" out there, seems extra fucked up now.

I remember he did a sketchers commercial with his wife if i recall, it was awesome... as awesome as a sketchers commercials gets. so funny to see him at his age pushing sneakers, he would promote anything, he was awesome.

yep. i wonder how many more injuries we would have these days, these atheletes are human weapons of muscle and distruction, flying around with caution to the wind throwing their bodies around would be sheer insanity.. and amazing to watch.

He was signing at Sports Gallery just a week ago Saturday and looked fine. I assume he still ate healthy and took care of himself, and surely had access to the best medical care, but I guess when it's your time...

This one hits me harder than any celebrity / athlete death ever has, and only Johnny Bench's passing will compare, when that dreaded day comes.

I thought it was kinda shitty that the HOF tweeted an "in memory" tweet for him, even though he was deemed unworthy of having a plaque screwed to the wall inside their little museum.

I hate to say it but if they come calling now saying they are now putting him in, then his family should tell them to kick rocks. I know they won't but if it ever happens, then they should tell them this.  I think baseball was going down hill slowly with viewership and attendance after the 80s due to real players like Pete fading away and MLB started to realize this and thus allowed the use of steroids to create the HR boom era.  MLB allowed this because it was all about needing viewership and attendance back for their greed to continue getting richer, then when people questioned the HR records being broken all the time is when they had to come clean and then blamed the players for using it.  They ban a baseball player for gambling but not a drug user unless you do it 3 times and that was only made a rule after the steroid era.  MLB are Hypocrites.

He was scheduled to be in the DC area in a few weeks for an autograph session.

Woke up a little while ago and my day will be sour.

I'm definitely a Cincy kid. Once lived on Yorktown (St/Dr?) when a shitload of Reds lived on it--Hutch, my next door neighbor was Jerry Lynch. Right across the street was Roselawn Park with 5 ball fields. Did my imitation of Reds batting stances and fantasized that I was my then current favorite player, from T-ball up through Knothole.

Like many of you, I loved Pete like only a starry-eyed kid could. RIP, Charlie Hustle.

(As an aside, I'm still pissed that Frank Robinson got traded--another great Red.)

It's weird I've never been one to get sad about celebrities deaths. Kirk Cobain my senior year of high school shocked me but I wasn't sad.

With Pete even though he was a son of a bitch, he was OUR son of a bitch. You can say what you will about the person, but what he represents is what the city is about, hard work, grit, and determination. Pete is Cincinnati and Cincinnati is Pete.

I'm just bummed
