Carson Wants Out

Recommended Posts

I don't post as much as I look at this forum, but looking at all of this stuff going on with Carson Palmer and who at first I didn't even want to call by name, I really feel like this is what needs to be done.

You have your franchise player such as Peyton Manning telling the owner what needs to be done, are you really going to just say bye to the most important position on your team because your OC blows you off everyday damn day Mike!?

To me, bringing Brad in here and even Jackson as the backup QB would make this team 10x better to start. Benson would come back and make Palmer play with a "legit" backup behind instead of his brother worried about making iPhone apps.

Will we soon see how much Brown cares about winning and doing what this city deserves or if he just wants to keep worrying about this money and we soon lose our NFL team.

If Carson wanting to leave is true why is everyone assuming it is because he wants Brat out? Maybe he wanted Lewis out. Brat has been his only NFL OC. Maybe he thinks Brat is getting scapegoated.

Wasn't there something between Marvin and Carson a few games back when the game was expiring and Carson had to call time out to stop the clock. I thought Marvin sort of thru Carson under the bus saying something like he didn't need to worry about clock management?

This could be true also, but I really feel Palmer is more worried about Brat being gone than Lewis with this coming out after this Brad dinner has come around.

What really sucks is that even if it's a successful power play, we'll have to wait until at least after the Senior Bowl to find out...

I hate the boredom of the offseason as much as the next guy, but this just sucks.

Two more updates from the site:
Chilly Update 2
Our sources have told us that their is a 90% chance that Mike McCoy will be named OC for the Cleveland Browns. If this is the case, then Childress is in play for real in Cincinnati. Then the battle of Mike vs. Marvin will take place to determine what Brad's role will be. If I were Chilly, with everything that's going on, I'm not sure I would even want to come here!

With Carson, Chilly, and Mike vs Marvin situations heating up, things are about to get very, very interesting! Let's hope Marvin gets his way and Chilly becomes OC, which also means Carson will stay put! Trust me when I tell you that my 2 sources inside the Bengals front office are just as frustrated as the fans are! When I speak with them lately, they just sound deflated.

Carson update!
We have just learned that Carson will be putting out a statement this week to address this situation. It is said that he will attempt to defuse the current tension by announcing that he has made no decisions on his future and that he will wait and see what happens over the next few weeks. He will also state that no demands have been made, only the exploration of different possibilities. If our sources are correct as they usually are, then this tells me Palmer does not want to go public with the current situation, which I can respect. But, I think the time has come for him to go public, he is a class act and I'm not surprised he wants to handle it this way.
Sounds like the whole situation is pretty legit. Going to be very, very interesting.

Bengals: No comment on Palmer report
By GEOFF HOBSON

Updated: 5:30 p.m.

MOBILE, Ala. - Nice Senior Bowl greeting.

Shortly after touching down here Sunday afternoon the Bengals were made aware of Chris Mortensen's report on ESPN that Bengals quarterback Carson Palmer wants to be traded, or he'll contemplate retirement.

Texts and calls to Palmer weren't returned and the Bengals had no comment.

But the last time Bengals president Mike Brown was faced with a similar ultimatum, he refused to trade wide receiver Chad Ochocinco in 2008. Palmer, 31, has four years left on the $97 million extension he signed at the end of the 2005 season that gave him the league's richest contract and the Bengals have virtually no experience behind him with brother Jordan Palmer the backup and rookie Dan LeFevour No. 3.

Left tackle Andrew Whitworth said he wouldn't comment until he heard Palmer talk about the subject directly.

The Ocho weighed in with this tweet: "Carson Palmer demands a trade? Last person demanded a trade in Cincy was crucified by the media n had to win the fans back. how will this go?"

The story broke with no definitive word yet on the finalization of the Bengals coaching staff. Head coach Marvin Lewis met with a potential new offensive coordinator in former Vikings head coach Brad Childress last Thursday, the same day he pledged "to fix us," and leaving no doubt that he considers Palmer his quarterback.

"We're battle buddies," said Lewis, referring to how both underwent their most severe criticism this past season since they became a team in 2004.

But for the first time in his Bengals career, Palmer expressed visible frustration during the team's 4-12 season in which he tied his career-high 20 interceptions, several of the "not-on-the same page variety. Although he succeeded in lobbying management to sign wide receiver Terrell Owens just before training camp, the results didn't pan out in wins and The Ocho and Owens aren't expected back.

He also spoke of his family being bothered by things said about him publicly and how last season garbage had been strewn on his lawn. And while Palmer hasn't joined the public assault of Bob Bratkowski, the only NFL offensive coordinator he's ever had, he chose to decline comment when Lewis was rehired three weeks ago. The offense has declined from No. 8 in 2006, Palmer's last Pro Bowl season, to No. 10 in 2007, No. 24 in 2009 and No. 20 last year.

The report is stunning in the context that Palmer has always been careful to say the right things. No doubt the Bengals plan to get a clarification from his agent, Davd Dunn, and they'll get the chance this week. Dunn represents Washington quarterback Jake Locker, the top quarterback for the North team the Bengals are coaching.

Whatever is going on behind the scenes, sounds like there is trouble in paradise...

If this is true, it does not give me a good feeling about this organization. Most players need a paycheck and cannot make NFL money anywhere else---the Bengals have 53 jobs every year. Palmer, who does not need the money, says he may retire rather than take another year with the Bengals if there are no changes. Classy player....that does not bode well for the Bengals. This could speak volumes of how the Bengals are run.

In the meantime I am watching the Steelers beating the Jets....what a crappy day...

This may be a chess move...maybe by CP while channeling ML?

In any event...I have a feeling that things will go as posted above: there will be denials/clarifications, and nothing will be decided until after the Senior Bowl and the Childress talks.

MB cannot take a direct ultimatum and bend. He will, however, make "the changes we had informed you a month ago we would make" once the dust settles.

That would give CP the opening to say "what the hell were you guys thinking anyway...I love it here."

Wow.

If there is truth to this, and Carson somehow manages to force a change in the coaching staff...

Wow.
any he should have some say.

If there's truth to this rumor at all in that he's demanding a trade or else, I don't really agree with how he's going about it, but in general I do think that if you're going to make someone your franchise QB, by year 3 or so they should be included in discussions as far as head coach and OF hirings. That's responsibility that comes along with being a franchise QB.

To squash a few of the comments I've seen, Carson said in one of his press conferences towards the end of the season that he hoped Marvin would be back. He said he was a great coach.

Report Palmer wants out starts Senior week
By GEOFF HOBSON

Updated: 8:45 p.m.

MOBILE, Ala. – The Bengals began coaching the Senior Bowl Sunday night under a mushroom cloud.

Shortly after touching down here Sunday afternoon the Bengals were made aware of Chris Mortensen's report on ESPN that quarterback Carson Palmer wants to be traded, or he'll contemplate retirement. Texts and calls to Palmer and agent David Dun weren't returned as of Sunday evening and the Bengals had no comment.

No one from Palmer's camp denied the report after it surfaced Sunday morning and the Bengals could meet with Dunn here this week. He represents Washington quarterback Jake Locker, the top quarterback for the North team the Bengals are coaching.

The last time Bengals president Mike Brown was faced with a similar ultimatum, he refused to trade wide receiver Chad Ochocinco in 2008. Palmer, 31, has four years left on the $97 million extension he signed at the end of the 2005 season that gave him the league's richest contract at the time and the Bengals have virtually no experience behind him with brother Jordan Palmer the backup and rookie Dan LeFevour No. 3.

If Palmer does indeed seek a trade, there is a trading window of only about a month before the collective bargaining agreement is set to expire March 4. According to NFL.com, Palmer gets $11.5 million in 2011 and 2012, $13 million in 2013 and $14 million in 2014. He has $1 million roster bonuses in 2012, 2013 and 2014.

Left tackle Andrew Whitworth said he wouldn't comment until he heard Palmer talk about the subject directly. Ravens wide receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh, Palmer's favorite target when he was in Cincinnati, said the report doesn't surprise him but he emphasized he has only texted with him and not spoken to him.

"I'd be interested to hear what he says about the retirement thing," Houshmandzadeh said.

The Ocho weighed in with this tweet: "Carson Palmer demands a trade? Last person demanded a trade in Cincy was crucified by the media n had to win the fans back. how will this go?"

The report is stunning in the context that Palmer and those around him have always been careful to say the right things as the textbook franchise quarterback.

Palmer also spoke of his family being bothered by things said about him publicly and how last season garbage had been strewn on his lawn. The offense has declined from No. 8 in 2006, Palmer's last of two Pro Bowl seasons, to No. 10 in 2007, No. 24 in 2009 and No. 20 last year.

The story broke with no definitive word yet on the finalization of the Bengals coaching staff. Lewis met with a potential new offensive coordinator in former Vikings head coach Brad Childress last Thursday, the same day he pledged "to fix us," but leaving no doubt that he considers Palmer his quarterback.

"We're battle buddies," said Lewis, referring to how both underwent their most severe criticism this past season since they became a team in 2004.

But does Lewis need a new buddy? If Palmer wants out, do they use the fourth pick in the draft on Missouri junior quarterback Blaine Gabbert? Locker figures to be gone before they pick in the second round. They are also coaching Nevada's Colin Kaepernick, a guy that could rise that high with a good showing here.

I know nothing about bengalsinsider.com or whatever that site is, but I would tend to agree with their assertion that CP has probably asked to "explore" other opportunities because he's unhappy with the current situation of the franchise and ESPN took their own liberties to add the "OMG Palmer DEMANDS a trade and THREATENS to retire."

My take for those who hate the fact that the Steelers and Jets are the two remaining AFC teams so much that they'd rather read this message board than pay attention to the game:

1. I love CP and really want to see him get an opportunity to run a different offense before I decide if he's got what it takes to win a Super Bowl for the Bengals. It would really be a shame to end his career on this sort of note because change in this organization is so long overdue, you're franchise's best player shouldn't have to threaten retirement to get it.

2. I would hate to draft a QB #4. We're in a position to have a GREAT DL next year if we could add Bowers or Fairley or Quinn or Dareus. Drafting one of these sorry ass QBs at the top of this draft class would be a disaster.

3. If he really would retire rather than play next year...Here's rooting for a lockout. Give CP a year to think about it and give us a shot at a better QB in 2012 if we need to take one with the 4th pick.

4. Fuck you Mike Brown. Only you could be so fucking awful at your job that my favorite player would rather retire than play for the shit-hole organization you run. Where is the grim reaper when you need him?
