Possible backup QBs

I bet they run with Simien on the roster and Browning on the PS. They did kick the tires on both Aiden O'Connell (4th for Raiders) and Dorian Thompson-Robinson (5th for Browns). Both have looked good in the preseason.  

 

I have never been a proponent of drafting a QB because I think they don't provide much early and we want a veteran who can start and win games. Those 2, and recent success by rookies, shows that's probably wrong.

1-Do the Bills release Matt Barkley? He was on their practice squad last year

2-If DTR wins the Browns backup job do they cut Josh Dobbs? He has a cannon arm, can run and is smart but isn't known for his accuracy

3-We reportedly wanted to draft Mason Rudolph at some point. I don't like him though

4-Brian Hoyer might be out in LAV, he might be an upgrade?

5-Things are interesting in Philly with Marcus Mariota maybe being pushed by 6th rounder Tanner McKee. Mariota's contract doesn't really allow for a release or trade. 

6-Logan Woodside probably isn't an upgrade but we drafted him

7-Trey Lance is interesting. But we would have to trade for him

8-Matt Corrall is a really interesting guy. Going into his 2nd year. He would have 3 more years under a reasonable contract. He won't be a part of anything in Carolina with Young and Dalton there.

Used to be anyway, that backups were looked at to be as much replications of the entrenched starter as would be possible. 
 

One example was our Erik Wilhelm back in the day. Was a clone of Norman in size/passing styles….even down to being blonde and left-handed.

As late last season/playoffs, and this past preseason game, his one and (in reality) only position is left tackle. He isn’t versatile enough for other spots on the line. LT is the best he has.

Dalton's post Bengals career is a lot like Bridgewater's and Ryan Fitzpatrick's. They have bounced all over the league, but they always end up on teams with unsettled QB situations. They do not join teams that have franchise QBs entrenched on the depth chart in front of them. They are used to being starters or at least being able to compete to be the starter.

a good Backup qb is one of those things that doesnt really exist. unless you have a bad starting QB.

 

with Burrow we are a borderline superbowl team, without him we are a borderline playoff team, no matter who is back there.

 

Trevor sucks, but the difference between him and browning starting over a whole season is probably 2 losses.

Not sure if Dalton coming back here is a good idea either, from a locker room culture standpoint. He's too reminiscent of the Marvin Lewis era. He's a good guy and all, but I just don't think he would fit in.

Not sure where all this “he’s coming back” bollocks started, but he is solidly entrenched as Bryce Young’s backup in CAR. 
 

His coach is in his corner…even calling him a “future Hall of Famer”. A stretch, naturally, but certainly not sounding like he will be heading to the street anytime soon. The fact his two-year $10 bills contract has $8 bills fully guaranteed, basically seals it.
