Bengals start re-signing some guys (Peerman, Miles, Rey, Hawkins, Huber, Harris, Nugent, Gillberry, Geathers, Maualuga, Jones, Roland, Tate, Quinn)

We should be looking to upgrade the offense. Andre is the only offensive starter who is a free agent but a number of backups could be upgraded. Gradkowski, Scott, Leonard, Quinn, Tate, and Roland aren't hard to move up from. We need a more explosive receiver across from AJ and a more explosive RB to make BJGE the backup.

For what it's worth (not very much) in a mock offseason at another site we replaced the above backups with Chad Henne, Mike Goodson, Danny Woodhead, Travis Beckum, Donald Jones, and Jeremy Trueblood on cheap deals, all at 1 mil or less. Grad and Tate were our only offensive free agents who attracted interest from other teams.

Really, you talked to those guys agents and figured out they'd take that much? You can't just build a team like Madden. "oh this guy is rated 76 and this guy is a 79 = automatic upgrade"
I would like to see them upgrade the depth but it's more difficult than you're making it out to be and to be quite honest none of your suggestions thrill me in the slightest. If those are our choices I'd rather build depth in the draft.

There's no saying you can't build through the draft even with those mocked signings. Better to full out the roster and make upgrades from there. I doubt low tier players have much if any signing bonus we'd have to eat if they end up bring cut...

The problem with the draft is there aren't any veterans in it, guys who you know can play in the NFL. The day 1 and 2 draftees will make the roster, the day 3 guys might or might not. In that mock we signed those guys by having the highest bid for them. Most of them got just the vet minimum on a 1 year deal. We did have to raise our bids on a few players including Henne, Newman, Jones, Gilberry, and Sims. Phillip Wheeler was our big offseason acquisition at 3.3 mil per. We tagged Andre, signed MJ to a 5 year deal for 43 mil, and Geno to a 5 year extension for 61 mil. We traded down from 21 with the Eagles then up from 55 with the Bills. Our draft was Matt Elam, Eddie Lacy, Alec Ogletree, Travis Kelce, and Kiko Alonso. We traded our 5th rounder for Devin Hester and added the Eagles 3rd rounder for 2014.

The Bengals had 27 free agents or about half the roster at the end of last season. There are plenty of opportunities to upgrade the roster with inexpensive veterans.

The Bengals opted for age and familiarity when they signed kickerMike Nugent Sunday to a two-year deal, meaning that one of their most prominent players in last year's playoff run won't return.

Nugent, who strained his kicking calf in a Dec. 5 practice and re-injured it two weeks later, watched as Josh Brown came off the street and won AFC Special Teams Player of the Month with an 11-for-12 effort on field goals that included the 43-yard winner in Pittsburgh with four seconds left that put the Bengals into the playoffs.

But Nugent is now healthy and brings back a steel-belted field goal percentage that borders on 84 percent during his three seasons in Cincinnati.

Plus, he turned 31 last week and while the Bengals were very impressed with Brown, he turns 34 next month and would be close to 36 when this two-year deal ends.

"It's great to be able to come back to a place where you love going to work every day," Nugent said. "That obviously means a lot and I really think we've got a good thing going with the specialists. We've been together a long time and that not only helps us, but it helps the team, too."

On Friday the Bengals announced five-year deals with Nugent's holder, punterKevin Huber, and his long snapper, Clark Harris, a trio that is now heading into its fourth season together. When Nugent got hurt, he was 82.6 percent for the season (19-for-23 on field goals) and thought he could have been back for the Dec. 23 game in Pittsburgh. But he re-injured it and went on season-ending reserve for the second time in his three seasons here.

"I think it was a case where the mind wants to do more than the body can allow," Nugent said. "You get the competitive juices going, and that's how the mind works. I should have been more patient. I've just gone into this offseason working hard enough to make sure it doesn't happen again. I think for a guy that works as hard I do, that shouldn't happen and I'm trying to make sure it won't again."

Nugent admitted it had been an offseason of uncertainty and anxiety when the season ended like it did. But he got lost in his workouts and says he got the calf back to 100 percent a few weeks after the season.

"I had made up my mind that no matter what happens, I was going to be kicking somewhere," Nugent said. "I feel like I haven't reached my peak physically or mentally. I don't think age matters. I'm excited about the next step and that we can keep what we've got going."
