Free Agent Help for the Defense

I'd be real OK with 3-4 on offense, we're getting to a better position to go BPA in round 2-4 with the defensive FA signings.

Surw looks like OL or linebacker ..hopefully a good one drops to them without reaching too much..

If the corner or wide receiver is a good pick in round two so be it...

I heard Jeff Gladney and a few good receivers that may be there..

Its nice having the top pick in every round....

Yep, just hope they use them well, could move around a bit and have 4 picks in the top 100. Need to make them all count no matter if it's JB at #1 or not.

The defense had a bunch of holes to fill and they've done pretty well so far.  Adding starters at DT and CB along with a starting slot CB is a good start at least.  There is still a glaring need at LB and to a lesser extent at safety.  I'm not expecting much else in free agency as far as top talent.  Someone might get cut or maybe a trade could materialize, but likely help is only coming from the draft.

Pleased with Free Agency so far.  A CB group of"

William Jackson
Darius Phillips
Trae Waynes
Mackensie Alexander

Tony Brown

Winston Rose

Can't believe they won't come out of FA without at least a middlin', FA LB signing (in addition to possibly Vigil).

Geez, I forgot they signed Rose and he played for my CFL team!

Strikes me as odd as well.  I wonder if they've got something in the works, either a trade, LB-heavy draft (possibly with trade picks) or some other LB target they expect to get released?

They tried to get a LB. They were in on Shobert and the guy from Chicago up until the very end.  Just didn’t work out.

No thankee. He's pretty far past his prime and is mainly a pass rusher. We need an off the ball LB, especially one who can cover. Josh Bynes would be a good signing. Nigel Bradham would be ok. Danny Trevathan should be an option too.

True.  That's because they have so many remaining unsold AJ Hawk jerseys in storage at the Pro Shop.

He's got 6.5 sacks in 4 years despite playing with JJ Watt, Whitney Mercilus, and 3 of those years with Clowney.  Reader is not an interior pass rusher and will be subbed out in obvious passing situations.

Yeah and in those same 4 years JJ Watt had 21.5 sacks and 16 of them came in 1 season!  lol

Watt, Mercilus and Clowney didn't have big sack numbers during Readers time with the Texans.

Readers rookie year, (2016), Watt missed 13 games with a back injury.  2017 Watt missed 11 games with a leg injury.  Watt had a good year in 2018 but missed another 8 games last year, (2019).  Mercilus missed 11 games in 2017.

2016-2019 Watt had 21.5 sacks total and 16 of those came in 1 year.

2016-2019 Mercilus had 20 sacks.

2016-2018 Clowney had 24.5 sacks.

The only 1 out of those 3, (Watt, Clowney & Mercilus), that ever registered a double digit sack during that time was Watt in 2018 when he had 16.

He didn't have a whole lot of help.  2016 the other NT/DT was Vince Wilfork, and he had 0 sacks.

2017 it was Brandon Dunn, 0 sacks.  2018 it was Brandon Dunn again, 0 sacks.  2019 it was Brandon Dunn again, wow he finally a sack!  The only one but hey!  lol

He's only 25 and hasn't even played a down for the Bengals yet!

I'd like to think having him alongside Geno vs. Billings, (who by the way only had 3.5 sacks

in 3 seasons), will open up opportunities he probably didn't have in Houston.  If not for himself,

definitely for Dunlap, Hubbard and Lawson.  Not being able to stop the run killed this team

last year and has for years to be perfectly honest!!  Even when we had better overall defenses

looked how bad we got gouged in the playoffs versus the run!

2011 vs Texans 35 carries, 188 yards and 2 TD's

2012 vs Texans 39 carries, 158 yards and 1 TD

2013 vs Chargers 40 carries, 196 yards and 2 TD's

2014 vs Colts 25 carries, 114 yards and 1 TD

2015 vs Stealers 29 carries, 167 yards and 0 TD's

That's horrible!  Gave up an average of 34 carries for 165 yards.  Almost 5 yards a carry!

I second that - well done!

There's always more behind the numbers if you look objectively.

Zac Taylor, is that you?  This explains the free-agent pickups of a run-stuffing DL and two in the secondary that can tackle.  Keep up the good work!

Please keep trying to get a quality linebacker that can cover (and tackle), and a quality offensive tackle.

In the San Diego playoff game, we gave up a late 54 yard run to Ronnie Brown when everyone was on the line of scrimmage. That pads their rushing stats as the defense actually played well in that game while the offense, especially Dalton was dreadful. That's the game after which Melvin Ingram said the SD defense knew what every play would be before the snap.

Regarding Reader's pass rushing, you might just want to take it from him. He was subbed off in obvious passing situations.

One name to mention as a possibility at LB is Mark Barron, who the Stealers cut last week.  He was a cap casualty and played pretty well for them last year.

Did a lil research on Mr. Barron..

Top safety coming out of college..

Hasnt performed well in his career..

Hes really not suited as a backer but cant cover as a safety..

A backup and better come on the cheap..
