Keeping our enemies close: 2023

Recommended Posts

Certainly not making excuses for the Chargers, but these incredibly quick turnaround Thursday night games help create a lot of bad football. One team or the other tends to be not ready to play (although not to the extent the Chargers were unready to play last night). Guys are having to be playing in live football games when they should probably still be soaking their sore bodies in a tub.

I get that the point of these Thursday night games is more TV revenue, but who Thursday night? I know HS sports are given the spotlight on Friday night, but why not Tuesday nights instead? It would give the players an extra day in between the usual Sunday games, which might mean less sloppy football. Tuesday night NFL football makes a bit more sense than Thursday night fball imo.

They don't break it down by position group, the scouting is done regionally. They have input from the coaches on what type of guy they like,

"We need a guy that's bad, but not so bad that we can't spend all off-season talking about how great he actually is.. so not total dogshit but more like he's got some stuck to his shoe. You know, not great at football but a deft hand with the 'ol ketchup bottle. Someone we can keep in the starting line up for years even though he'd get cut from a CFL practice squad. Get on it!"

He was a good HC as well, one of the best this franchise has ever had, definitely top 5. He just couldn't win the big game, that was his ultimate weakness...if every game was at 1 pm EST he would be a great coach, it was when the bright lights came on that he puckered up and couldn't get it done. Glad to see him mentor Pierce, maybe if Pierce gets the HC job he will be apart of his staff in some capacity.

If Marvin has Joe Burrow I think he would have been a HOF level coach or if Carson didn't shred his knee in 2005 and Chris Henry die a few months later...things could have been different.

yes he did a helluva job - really brought the team out of the dark ages and did a ton of stuff. Great talent evaluator too.

Terrible playoff record but I didn’t think his best players played best when it counted most in those games, either. And things may have been different if Carson hadn’t been hurt… they were peaking st the right time that year.

I think  he’s itching to coach again and I hope he gets the chance.

I will be forever indebted to Marvin for bringing us out of the dark ages

Interesting factoid:

In four years of college football at Oregon, Justin Herbert had three head coaches, three offensive coordinators (two men shared the job when he was a sophomore) and two quarterback coaches.

In four years of pro football with the Chargers, Herbert has had three head coaches, three offensive coordinators and three quarterback coaches.

Herbert will be 26 in 2024, his ninth season in college and pro football. He will have his seventh head coach in those nine years, and likely his seventh offensive coordinator and sixth quarterback coach.

Just re-watched the Tyler Boyd 3d and 9 in OT catch. Watch how Tee turns with him and sprints down the field as a blocking escort. That's how teams that want to win play.

I also loved how Mike Hilton ran along the sidelines with him…😎

This team is a TEAM.

Wow...

All that plus the fact that they have had major injuries to their stars more than the norm.

Herbert is a big arm kid with tremendous talent.

His rankings have slipped but he's a top tier threat facing him.
