Really? (Bengals sign WR Greg Little)

Recommended Posts

What if Greg Little is the same caliber player he always was but he isn't looked upon to be the No. 1 or No. 2 or No. 3 options in an offense?

Are his warts minimalized?   Because offense is going to go through Green (when he gets back),  Gio and Sanu.

Hopefully Hill gets up in the pecking order.

Little might or could become one of those annoying WRs that make one or two plays a game but they are notetable.

Yeah, very good points.  Hopefully nobody thinks/expects he's gonna compete with the likes of AJ and Sanu.  The question is can he be a decent peer with Wright and provide some veteran depth and player rotation at a position that desperately needs it.

French SoldierI don't want to talk to you no more, you empty-headed animal food trough wiper! I fart in your general direction! Your mother was a hamster and your father smelt of elderberries!

Sir Galahad: Is there someone else up there we can talk to?
French Soldier: No, now go away or I shall taunt you a second time!

I work with a lot of Cleveland Browns fans, the one cat said last night "watch little go to Cincinnati catch everything that gets thrown his way and be a star that's just Cleveland's luck" laughing my ass off

sounds good to me....

I don't expect it but as long as he is in a Bengals uniform I'll be rooting for him to catch everything in sight whenever he is out there.

Looking at targets and receptions:

2011:

Cleveland's QBs (McCoy + Wallace) combined for 310/570 = 54.5%

Andy Dalton was 300/516 = 58.1%.  Dalton = 106.6% of Cleveland's completion rate

Little was 61/119

Little (if playing with Dalton) projected to 59.0/107.7 = 54.8%

2012:

Cleveland's QBs (Weeden + Lewis) combined for 328/566 = 58.0%

Andy Dalton was 329/528 = 62.3%.  Dalton = 107.4% of Cleveland's completion rate

Little was 53/94

Little (if playing with Dalton) projected to 53.1/87.7 = 60.5%

2013:

Cleveland's QBs (Campbell, Weeden + Hoyer) combined for 379/681 = 55.7%

Andy Dalton was 363/586 = 61.9%.  Dalton = 111.1% of Cleveland's completion rate

Little was 41/99

Little (if playing with Dalton) projected to 39.2/85.1 = 46.0%

Cincinnati's top 3 WRs (by targets, ranked by %) in 2011 were:

Green 65/115 = 56.5%

Little 59.0/107.7 = 54.8%

Caldwell 37/68 = 54.4%

Simpson 50/105 = 47.6%

Cincinnati's top 3 WRs in 2012 were:

Hawkins 51/80 = 63.8%

Little 53.1/87.7 = 60.5%

Green 97/164 = 59.1%

Jones 18/32 = 56.3%

Cincinnati's top 3 WRs in 2013 were:

Jones 51/80 = 63.8%

Sanu 47/77 = 61.0%

Green 98/178 = 55.1%

Little 39.2/85.1 = 46.0%

Little's weighted average (adjusted for Dalton) over the past 3 seasons (using 3-2-1 weighting) is 47.1/89.7 = 52.5%

2011-2013 Dalton, weighted 3-2-1 = 356.2 / 555.0 = 64.2%

2014 Dalton = 103 / 151 = 68.2%

Projected 2014 Little, if playing at historical rates with 2014 Dalton = 13.6 / 24.4 = 55.7%

Cincinnati's top 3 WRs YTD in 2014 are:

Sanu 27/40 = 67.5%

Tate 10/15 = 66.7%

Green 17/26 = 65.3%

Little 13.6/24.4 = 55.7%

Little would be a WR3, behind Tate, ahead of Sanzenbacher, at this point.  Little was handicapped by playing with Cleveland's atrocious QBs corps and would've seen a 7-11% increase in his stats if playing with Dalton over the same 3 year period.  His adjusted 2011-12 numbers would've been good enough to be our WR2, but his 2013 numbers tailed off significantly and it's hard to know how many of his missed targets were due to the QB merry-go-round and how many were due to diminishing skills.  If I had more time, I would look at the other CLE WRs over that period to see if they also demonstrated a similar tailing-off so I would know where to lay the blame.

But if we take his 2013 numbers as read, then his catch % dropped from 55-60% to barely above 45%.  I don't know which Greg Little the Bengals signed... the new-and-not-improved version or the older, much better version.

Former Cleveland Browns WR Greg Little signs with Cincinnati Bengals

Greg Little, who was released by the Browns in May, has caught on with the Cincinnati Bengals. (Plain Dealer file)

CINCINNATI, Ohio - Former Browns receiver Greg Little has signed a contract with the Cincinnati Bengals. Little signed after the Bengals put receiver Marvin Jones on season-ending injured reserve. Jones is expected to have surgery on an injured ankle that has hindered him since the spring.

Little was among the receivers the Bengals brought in to work out Tuesday. They picked Little from a group that included former Raiders and Ohio State Buckeyes quarterback Terrelle Pryor; and Cobi Hamilton, a former Bengals sixth-round draft pick.

The Browns, who play at Cincinnati on Thursday, Nov. 6, cut Little in May.

He was the Browns' second-round pick in 2011 as part of the trade with Atlanta that enabled the Falcons to draft Julio Jones, and was a controversial figure from the moment he landed on the Browns' doorstep.

He was suspended for all of 2010 at North Carolina for accepting improper agent benefits, and was known more in Cleveland for his drops than for his 155 receptions.

Last season, he lost his starting job for a few weeks to Davone Bess, who was struggling himself. Little was also cited for a series of traffic violations last year, including one after he totaled his Audi while drag racing on Ohio 176 near Spring Road, telling police he was traveling 127 mph in a 55 zone.

Little had the size (6-3, 225) and ability to excel, but failed to take his game to the next level in Cleveland despite  a promising rookie season. That year, he caught a team-high 61 passes for 709 yards and two touchdowns. He also dropped 14 passes, tied for second-most in the NFL.

Little and suspended Browns receiver Josh Gordon were close during Little's time in Cleveland.

Gordon tweeted Tuesday:

Flash Gordon         @JOSH_GORDONXII Follow

@Str8UpGlittle with them Bengals stripes now huh.. We still goin kick yall ass.. Lol
