Jermaine Burton won’t travel with Bengals, play Week 18 due to coach’s decision

Guessing the coaches loved him, but I’m sure the FO vetted/liked him as well. And they had an insider (TJH) who vouched for him too. That said, I remember when he was drafted, and instant reaction on TV from Nick Saban (after extolling his playing ability) definitely got my attention, as he referred to his maturity and focus issues. Meanwhile, Saban was falling all over himself praising the character of Tide guys like Terrion Arnold and Kool Aid McKinstry. 
 

What pisses me off about Duke and crew is that they often get too cute with picks… almost like they think they’re smarter than other teams on player evaluation, and they roll the dice on value picks with question marks early. So we basically get a year from a guy who under-achieved/under-delivered (although he did show a few flashes as both a WR and returner).
 

At best, Burton could have shown out, and lessened the urgency for the Bengals to consider re-signing Tee Higgins, or look to the draft for reinforcements. Instead, with very limited snaps, so far he’s shown himself to be a talented head case who can’t be depended upon.

All is the same thing. His injuries were huge red flags. I think they'd do better to rotate rounds. Take their guy in round 1 and then round 2 literally take the best available on mel kipers board. That may sound silly but it would be better.

To me, there’s a difference though. All had injury issues, yes - but he’s not a knucklehead. He showed that when he’s out there, he’s a helluva player who is dedicated to being a football player. Burton obviously hasn’t shown that level of commitment/dedication.
 

So yeah, they did take a risk in drafting both guys - but I think you gotta hit on your day 1 and day 2 guys consistently as a “draft and develop” team. So to me, guys like Burton and Malik Jefferson, who was a superb athlete but terrible player - you don’t draft on day 2. On day 3, I think it’s more appropriate to take some chances.

like 20-25k by my estimation, after his 1mil+ signing bonus, he has been paid 1.5-2 mil for this season in total ash in hand before taxes.. so he should be sitting on 700-800k. he also made 200k at alabama through NIL funds. 99k per season the last two he was there.

Also Kelsey konway is a dumb bitch who actively tries to make everything more dramatic or negative. there is no expectation of third rounders being starters or high snap guys.. first for sure, second yes.. third, and late this.. GTFO..

3rd rounder washington has over two seasons now, got 26 catches for 261 yards combined.

if we drafted him in the first, sure, it was the third. a borderline throw away pick... literally a mid third...which i JUST showed the third round picks of the last 3 years of the division foes.. what was there, 4 of like 13 players are even playing real snaps around the division?

 

everyone needs to stop pretending we invested something special into this guy. it was a midround 3rd round pick.  every mock i can find, over 20 of them, projected him as a third round pick.

From what I've read about Taylor he believed that the WR room had enough leadership to influence Burton to grow up and take advantage of the opportunity he was given.

 

The reports of domestic violence are reckless without proof, if it were true u would think he would be arrested by now or in the very near future. 

 

If it's just the eviction and not anything more than there should be a path forward, Burton obviously needs to mature and make better decisions but his career isn't over. He's cheap labor at this point and all know MB loves two things:

1. Redeeming wayward, troubled youths through football

2. Talented players on rookie deals

 

Burton checks both of those boxes

I don't think I'm imagining this, but didn't Chase say earlier this season something along the lines of, "You can talk to a person but he's an adult and knows what he has to do." My memory suggests it was a locker room interview back when Burton didn't show for practice.

 

If that's the case, then it may be that Burton has tried the patience of his peers somewhat. I trust the character of the receiver's room to know when to be helpful and when they know it's just a case of pissing in the wind.

Coaches and players are too soft these days. What Burton needs is good ol fashion ass whooping. Sometimes that's the extreme you have to go to when dealing with these punk ass youngsters. 

 

He done gambled it all away. Those slot machines are at least a dollar a pull. You can pull that MFer at least 2 or 3 times a minute. Times 60 minutes in a hour. That's over $100 per hour and probably a very conservative estimate. So not shocking at all to think of his little million already completely gone.  Dudes a fucking idiot. Someone buy him a GD fishing pole or something. Get him doing something else with his free time.

I think he will eventually get it. But you wanted to be the team getting him on the second chance, not the team that took the first risk.

The X account that claimed he was a domestic abuser has been deleted, for what it's worth. If he's facing criminal charges, he may very well get cut. If not, the team should get him some counseling. He's obviously not handling his money well and making bad choices all around. Maybe there's no fixing it but maybe he can benefit from new associates and better choices.
