Another First for this Organization that they can put in the NFL record books.  It amazes me how many firsts they can do except obtaining the Ultimate first.  I better not complain, I might get in trouble.  lol

Our coaches have a significant say in the draft, we all know that, so they have to share part of the blame when drafted players dont work out. That is part of the deal with our team, you get more input then with other teams but that comes with accountability (sometimes lol)

I had discussion with a Bengals fan on BR about this and he swears up and down that Zac does not have that much say in the matter on the players drafted and I said, yes, he does, probably the most and if not, like people think, then why is Duke Tobin not FIRED.  Well, we all know why that will never happen.

Surprised not to see some of the defensive backfield coaches go.

Unless they are bookmarked for promotion.

Same, Expected to see a clean house on D. But maybe that comes later.

I'd assume Kovacs is the kind of guy you just want in the system.

For those wondering about the position coaches being retained, I think we've seen this before... if Zac/the FO likes those coaches they'll keep them around and potentially let the new DC decide if he wants to keep them.  They could also make it a requirement that they take them, but that immediately will reduce the number of coaches that will be willing to take the job because the established ones will want some if not total autonomy to choose their own subordinates.  All I'm saying is don't be surprised if they're let go once a DC is hired.

I wrote out a substantial thread-killing post about my thoughts on Lou and the defense here, but just to extract the part where I agree with this move to fire Lou:

Quote

So what's the solution?  Could Lou succeed with "better" personnel?  Of course he could, he's proven it before.  Should the Bengals be banking on getting that holy grail mix of FA's again?  To me, no, they shouldn't.  I think they should fire Lou and bring in a DC with a much more standard system that players will recognize and be able to be plugged into -  because they're certainly not going to break the bank to get specialists and stars, and when such players get injured it has the potential to bring the whole thing down.  We should be watching a standard NFL defense that would shoot to the top of the league with great draft picks or a star FA or two - not a bottom of the barrel unit for which we have to pray the stars we have don't leave or get injured or it will get even worse (somehow!).

Essentially I agree with everyone who's saying the system requires too many specific player types, and maybe even too many Pro Bowl-level players to even be average, let alone a top unit.  It's much much easier to find a DC who can adapt than find a handful of players that can who won't get injured, won't leave, etc.  Couple that with the Bengals who have a very hard time attracting FA's and you're just shooting yourself in the foot IMO.

Is it going to be easy to find that guy?  Will they even try to find that guy, or maybe instead pick another "My system is gold, it's the players who suck!" type DC?  These are open and valid questions.

For me I thnk if you can bring in Salah, that would go a long way to be able to add DJ Reed, who I want as our CB1

I like Salah as well

He went thru hell in NY .

He's been highly praised..

Lous exotic defense might have been to much on the younger backs.

Maybe Salah could "dummy" it down and let players play and not think so much.

Zero sacks from Murphy this season. That's on Lou. Let's see what another DC can do with him.

Murphy didn't make the splash we perceived.

He's been limited in the rotation behind Trey.

I won't call him a bust yet.

See how a new DC and Dline coach can help him improve.

Frightening thought I just saw from a comment on Reddit - what if they promote from within for OL? 🤮

Who from within?

I think they go outside for a replacement

I wouldn't mind a ML return as awkward as that may be.  I don't see Marv wanting to come back though at this stage, but I could be wrong.

We will probably get an old head DC that's out the league looking to come back, or some college guy who's salary we can double saying we are giving them a chance.  I am hearing a lot of people thinking we probably won't get any one high profile that may make Zach feel threatened, but that's all opinion whether it's true or not we'll never know.
