Andre Smith breaks same foot, could be out for year

The Bengals were hit with a bevy of injuries Wednesday and even though quarterback Carson Palmer (throwing shoulder) and wide receiver Chad Ochocinco (ankle) weren't on the practice field, the one that has to concern them the most is the foot injury suffered by right tackle Andre Smith during practice.

After getting carted off the field, it is believed to be the same foot he broke three days into his rookie season, an injury that prevented him playing full time until the last three games. The injury took Smith out of the first 10 games of last season and when he had surgery on it back in January it wiped out all the spring drills and training camp for him.

Head coach Marvin Lewis had no information on Smith as he came off the field, but he indicated Palmer and Ocho will play Sunday. Smith was seen walking out of the building.

With Dennis Roland struggling at right tackle last month, Smith got promoted and has had a tough baptism against some of the NFL's elite rushers. He got benched for a play in the third quarter against Steelers outside linebacker LaMarr Woodley on Monday night and Roland gave up a sack on the one play he came into the game before Smith checked back into the game.

If Smith can't go Sunday in Indianapolis, who gets the nod against another elite rusher, left end Robert Mathis? The options are Roland and Anthony Collins, inactive for the last five games. Mathis is a bear on his home field and has racked up three double-digit sack seasons since 2004 and had 2.5 sacks and a forced fumble when the Bengals last played the Colts in 2008. He's got 6.5 sacks already at the halfway mark.

Damn Roland vs Robert Mathis....

If I were Palmer I would be embellishing the shoulder injury so I don't get killed on Sunday
This might not be far from his mind. The team is 2-6 and going nowhere.

Mathis is a beast and will destroy Roland all day, even if Andre can play, if I'm carson I wake up with a REALLY sore shoulder sunday morning lol But he won't do that I think. If Carson's able, he'll play.

:24: Ok, this was posted in the Enquirer comments section:

I'd rush Benson 40 times, Scott 20, and QB sneak Jordan the remainder.

Awesome. Put Jordon in Carson's jersey so the Colts don't bring the house too early in the game.

If Smith can't go then I wouldn't mind seeing Collins get a shot.

x2. I think they need to, as the season goes on (playoffs are highly unlikely - 9-7 would be the very worst they'd have to be, and with Balt, Pitt, SD, NO, and Indy ahead...) they need to make some evaluations on some guys who could be important piece parts of their future... guys like Collins, Caldwell, Simpson, Coffman, etc.

I think Collins has talent. Roland, OTOH, doesn't have much, and IMO isn't a piece part - he was a nice surprise last year, but as the year wore on, he showed that he's not a long-term answer - and this year has sealed it for me. Collins might be someone that's a piece of the puzzle on the OL for beyond 2010, along with Stephens and perhaps Otis Hudson .

I still stand by my thought that he hurt that foot prior to signing the contract last year and that is why the deal got done all of the sudden and then three days later, it's broken. It will never heal correctly, the dude is over 3 bills.

So you think he passed his physical while hiding a broken foot?

If what you say is true about Andre's foot being broken and the reason for the quick contract, add the Antonio Bryant fiasco and somebody needs to be walking down Pete Rose Way looking for a job. If it turns out Mike overruled in either or both cases, now that would be some funny shit wouldn't it?

WOW! take a moment and think about how stupid that actually sounds. did you even bother to consider how the guy's appearance and gait was before and after the incident? don't you suppose SOMEONE might have picked up on it during wind sprints and other conditioning drills, as well as the practice plays he ran from the LOS prior to the actual accident. andre came into camp in the range of 360 lbs. and you REALLY think he could hide a broken foot while running on it with that poundage? you couldn't have put much logical thought into that conspiracy prior to sharing it with us.
