I asked a friend of mine who’s a Bears fan his thoughts on Eberflus. His response was “Not much.” He thought he was too indecisive.

Yes, Eberflus failed miserably as a head coach, but he had excellent success as a defensive coordinator (which is how he eventually got promoted to a head coaching job in the first place. Being a coordinator and a head coach are very different jobs requiring different skill sets. Very few coaches seem to have both.

This was Eberflus in the moments immediately after the clock hit 0:00 in the Bears loss to Detroit on Thanksgiving...

He wasn't talking to anyone on the headset. He was just....lost. It was as though he had no idea how the game clock ran out. I actually felt sorry for him.

FWIW, with 1 TO left, Caleb Williams got sacked at the Lions' 41-yard-line, leaving the Bears with a 3rd-and-26 and a running clock that hit 0:30 when Williams was first able to get up. He eventually got a deep pass off, but the clock hit 0:00 before the ball even hit the turf. Eberflus was fired within hours, but at least he still had 1 timeout.

Horrific, catastrophic clock management. But as @dex points out, this would no longer be his responsibility. Probably a good thing.

A hard no on him.

I have no dog in this hunt but what were his fucking assistants doing?  I watched the game live. SF2, a guy that’s head spins when someone talks about cover 2.  I was calmly saying call a time out. 5 seconds later I am like, “What are you fucking doing”?

He has assistants!  In particular, the offensive coordinator should have screamed, “Call a fucking time out!!!”

Thinking about what others have said....this should actually be a very easy hire. All the coaches need to do is ask themselves who is the coach that gave them the most trouble in game and when game planning.

Eberflus would be a good addition. Besides his success as DC in Indy, which got him the Bears job, he called the defense in Chicago and did a good job. Their troubles were on offense and he did poorly in finding OCs but that wouldn't be an issue with the Bengals.

He'd probably not be too expensive either due to his Bears HC payout. That seems to be important to the Brown family. If Go's coaching salary numbers are correct, Zac Taylor makes less than Zack Moss and Lou Anarumo made less than half as much as Drew Sample last year. That is a bit hard to believe but shows poor resource allocation by the front office.

Here is he Bears defense with Free Agents. Blue UFA, Green RFA

LE Sweat 28 Taylor 25 Martin 25 Robinson 26
DT Dexter 27 Williams 25
DT Pickens 27 Cowart 25
RE Walker 26 Booker 28 Hardy 25
WLB Edwards 26 Ogbongbemiga 25 Sewell 27
MLB Edmunds 27 Sanborn 25
S Brisker 26 Hicks 26 Moore 25
S Byard 26 Owens 26
CB Stevenson 27 Speed 25
CB Johnson 28 Smith 27
NB Gordon 26 Blackwell 25

Eberflus not calling time-outs at the end of Bengals games shouldn’t be an issue. ZT had probably wasted a couple of TO’s preventing delay of game penalties because he couldn’t make his mind what play to call.  Chances are there won’t be any left.

Which means our box of rocks defensive backs would not have a clue what was going on.

Lou dumbed down the system too late to save his job.

Inheriting a defense that finished No. 30 in the NFL in both scoring defense (25.2 points allowed per game) and total defense (367.1 yards allowed per game) in 2017, Eberflus turned the defense around in just one season, to rank No. 10 in scoring defense (21.5 points allowed per game) and No. 11 in total defense (339.4 yards allowed per game) in 2018.

But Zac is already on staff.

Interesting that the difference between No. 10 and No. 30 is only 3.7 points and 27.7 yards.  I would have expected a larger difference…especially the yardage.

Some thoughts,

1. Eberflus would be great

2. I think they are waiting on Leonhard and Pleasant to lose to interview.

3. I hope they interview Christian Parker too, of the videos I posted his seemed the best-FWIW

4. I just don't see Al Golden being sucked away. From my understanding, because ND isn't in a conference they don't have to share any money

5. Robert Livingston probably gets an interview

We should be rooting for Rams-Broncos and Eagles losses to push things forward.

I think Eberflus, Leonard, Lupoi and Graham are likely the top contenders. I gotta believe that Rapien knows something bc Lupoi as a candidate is just not a name you pick out of the air.

Eberflus and Graham have experience as pro DCs… the others as NFL position coaches, and in Power 5 college programs. I’ve always liked Leonard as a smart, less talented player and I’m not surprised he’s well-regarded as a coach.

I like the fact that Eberflus has had successful runs as a DC and really, his defense in Chicago was good, too. He was just over his head as HC. But he’s not old and I’m sure he’d like another shot - so a DC opportunity where he’d have a lot of say-so would be appealing, especially when paired with a top-end Bengals’ offense and good ST crew.

If I remember correctly, Lupoi wasn't a name Rapien came up with himself.  Someone else mentioned it as a possibility in an article and he took interest.  I don't think he knows anything in this regard.
